  1. I just rebuilt a customer's computer installing Windows 7 in place of Vista. He has been on Verizon DSL connected directly to a Westell 6100G modem via Ethernet. He has already had this activated on his line before. Since the reinstall, will I still have to install Verizon's software or should it pick right back up when the modem is connected? I'd rather not install any Verizon junkware if I don't have to. To my knowledge he is on a DHCP network as he has never had to use a username/password to connect. Any input is appreciated.

all u should have to do is plug in the LAN/Ethernet and your good. I've yet to see any ISP that didn't work unless you used that "easy-to-use" software they include with the modem. We use to snake a neighbors business dsl line and she had att...we just plugged in the wireless usb dongle..it found here connection..and we surfed...no problem

For basic internet access, they should be just fine. However, if they use a pop/mail server (and not use web based mail) then they had to use a user/pwd to connect to the mail server(s). The install stuff is to help customer service should they need to connect and troubleshoot the pc. Most if not all modem setup should be done through the admin software which is usually web-based.
    Have a good one,

  4. Yeah that's what I'm hoping for. When I originally set up his DSL we didn't need to install anything. I just plugged it in and it launched the correct website to activate the modem. Since I had setup his account in advance it was just putting in the account ID and Password and finishing the activation. After that it's just auto-on. He has since received a new modem when the old one died and he installed all the software for it. I don't think it was really necessary though since he doesn't need to logon to the internet service. I'm basically trying to avoid a site visit just to plug in a couple of cables. I'm not even a professional computer tech but everyone expect on site delivery at no charge, which is no longer going to happen with fuel costs the way they are.

    Thanks
