Have downloaded .avi and tried in vain to convert it to vcd but keep recieving an avi chunk with the message "complete re interleave highly recommened etc". I couldnt find anything relevant on ask jeeves or any movie forums apart from 1 sole unanswered question posted in some obscure forum from which noone had replied (poor bugga!).
    It plays fine on Hyplay.
Ive since used a free version of vso divxtodvd to try to fully convert it but it freezes every time with 5 mins to go during the conversion.
This is driving me mental.. anyone??????????

In spite of the following explanation your file may be broken and require fixing. There are extended options in the open dialog menu box of virtualdub that could help fix the problem but you have to check the option on as you open the file. If the issue is errors in the streams then vdub can also be used to scan for errors.
    ----------------------------------------

Avi files are "Audio Video Interleaved" (note the first letter of each word).

When the video and audio are stored in an avi they can be placed one after the other ie... first the whole video stream then the complete audio stream(s) (less common or desirable) or they can be intermingled (interleaved) on frames or millisecond time points ie... first a video chunk then an audio chunk then another video chunk then another audio etc... Vdub has an option under the audio menu that lets you rewrite the file and set the interleave options. Whenever I need to change it, I use the audio preload (or preroll as some call it) setting of 500ms and interleave every 1 frame. The other option you will see in the same menu option has to do with synching the audio and video. In most cases you don't need to use that unless your audio plays too early or too late when compared to the video.

Although it has greater potential for synch issues if it's not interleaved, the way the streams are stored should not prevent you from converting the avi that it why I suspect a broken file.
