  1. I bought a Creative Labs moviemaker and it will record mpeg-2 files at a maximum resolution of 352x480. Obviously this is not a standard for SVCD, but I've been trying to use BBMPEG to correct the video and have had no luck. Does anyone know how to make a 352x480 stream SVCD compatible? Thanks for any suggestions in advance..

    sdbyrd,

Unless you DVD player cannot play those 352x480 clips, then...

But, if you DVD player does play them (after mux and stuff)
By going up to 480x480 is really a complete waist of time!! Why oh why
anyone would go this route is beyond me (except where you DVD player
doesn't suppor this res., then its a different story and you have not
choice but to up it up to 480 )

Note, assuming you have encodes of 480x480, when you play them on
your TV, the res will be bumped down to 352x480!! You're waisting your
time doing this - you're waisting your time!

Or, maybe you think that the quality will be better (more data, you say)
but, really, there's not much data to work on to even hint on more quality
in your encodes, not to mention that 352 bumpt to 480 is not much of
an even/double res. step up, as in 352 step up to 704.

Now, maybe you think that by SVCD, it's thought to be 480x480. Yes,
that's basically it. But 352x480 is basically an xSVCD. And these are
what I make all the time. I use to make 480x480. And, in short,
till I reaslised (give or take a few other exceptions, etc.) 480x480 is
    * extra work (encoding hours)
    * waist of time, as 480 will be bumpted down to 352 on your TV
    * quality wasn't all that good to begin with. Talking about from my
AVI captures, NOT my dvd rips. DVD rips are much better cause the
resolution to begin with is 720x480!!

Now, it sounds like you are using an Hardware MPEG2 card, as I have
one too. I have the WinTV PVR usb unit. It only does 352x480, and
nothing higher. And, to date, there is NO .reg file to modify successfully
to get higher, ie, 480x480 or 704x480, etc. Though, there are some
other USB hardware mpeg2 cards that do these higher res. 704 or 720
but I think they do this through tricks or somthing. I forget the exact
wording that I read it from, here in this forum.

Ignore all I said, if U R ONLY going to view on your PC screen.

But, 352x480 is a good resolution to begin with anyways.

Can I make a suggestion, though?
Do an encode, but with an higher bitrate, ie, 4000 or 6000 and THEN
re-encode it to 480x480 (if you must) to see if quality doesn't suffer
as much. Maybe you will be satisfied with this alternate method??

Hope all goes well with this for ya

  4. Thanks for the explanation. Yes, I have a Pioneer dvd player that I'm sure I will have no problems with...only thing is, Nero won't let me encode that file because it says it's not SVCD compliant. Also, I've tried recording at the highest bitrate (6mbps) but it's still 352x480 and I've tried using BBMPEG & TMPEGENC to force it to 480x480 and have had no luck. Thanks again for helping me out. Please let me know how I can get my current files (2mbps bitrate @ 352x480) to be burned as an SVCD to play on my dvd player...

  5. Also, when I encoded using the bitrate of 2mbps and turned off SVCD compatiblity for NERO, my Pioneer DV-C503 acts like the bitrate is too high because it just makes skreeching noises with distorted picture. I wouldn't think 2mbps is too much for this machine to handle. Am I wrong? Anything less than 2mbps looks pretty bad...

  6. Just an FYI: I also tried at 1.5mbps with no luck. Should be encoding this file or doing something else to it after it's been recorded because my player doesn't like these files. Do you think it would help if i DID re-encode them to 480x480 and if so, how do I force a 352x480 file to be 480x480? Thanks for all the help...

What? How exactly would that happen? Do you mean that a player that supports SVCD at 480x480 has some sort of conversion built in that actually resizes the image from 480x480 to 352x480? Or are you saying the TV itself resizes the image? Either way, it sounds a bit specious to me. If that were the case, there would be no point to a 480x480 spec that is meant to be played on TV. Where did you get that information?
