I have had a Pioneer 108D burner for around a year. I flashed it with firmware 1.18 from Gradius.com and it has been operating flawlessly. I'm building another PC and intend to buy a Pioneer ..ie.. providing I can get the Piodata F-W. I have been to gradius.com and it seems the site is no longer offering F-W updates of any description. Would appreciate receiving advise whether or not gradius.com is providing Piodata F-W for the latest Pioneer drives and if not, is the Piodata F-W available from another source.

A point of interest for members considering the purchase of a new burner. When I purchased the 108D, I sold the 106D I had been using for around 9 months to a friend and he says he has to date burned around 500 discs and it has performed flawlessly.

I believe this says something about the quality and reliability of the Pioneer burners.[/b]

  2. I would go ahead and get the Pioneer 111 and wait for the Buffalo firmware. It is not out yet but it will offer bitsetting and looks like it will be as good as the previous versions.

Actually, the Pioneer firmware for the 111 is very good so you may just want to keep it. I have had a number of Pioneer drives and I have never been very impressed with any model until the 111.
Still a few bugs in the system...

  3. I have had a 108D for quite awhile now and have been extremely pleased with it. I passed on Pioneer 109 and 110 models. I purchased a 111D about a month ago and I have been impressed with the burn quality. I will admit that bitsetting is not a huge issue for me (nor DVDRAM) so I am content with the stock Pioneer firmware for now. As chas0039 points out, the Buffalo firmware should be available soon and will rectify your bitsetting needs.

Agreed. I have the same burner installed, and like it a lot. It has seen pretty heavy use for a couple years, and I hope it lasts for a good while longer. Several months ago, I bought a 110D, either as a spare in case the 108 fails, or for a new computer that is yet to be built. It was 1.18, but I'm not sure whose f/w I flashed the 108 with. It was either the Gradius or from the (defunct) Flash Repository. Main reason for flashing was to make the burner region free, but I think it removed some other restrictions at the same time. (Speeds ? Riplock ?) The results have been very good -- never had a problem with the f/w change.

I used to have 3 or 4 sources for replacement Pioneer f/w bookmarked, but I think two of these are no more. Now there just seems to be the Dangerous Bros., and what they have for these Pioneer burners seems to always be in the beta section. If there are other sources for such Pioneer f/w, known to be good and reliable, I'd like to hear about them.
