  1. Why does it take a long time to copy vhs movies to dvd? Or am I doing somehting wrong?

I've converted the movies to mpg. Then I use nero vision 3 to burn the mpg movies to dvd. However it takes 2x to 3x as long compared to if copying a regular dvd movie.
    Is that normal?

I know that the difference is in a dvd movie, all the file structure is there and files are in VOB. Could it be that nero is trying to put the MPGs in a file structure and trying to convert to VOB?

Nero is probably reencoding. It does that.

How did you convert them to MPEG-2? If you converted to a proper MPEG-2 DVD format, it should not reencode. Look to the left in 'What is' DVD to see the DVD specifications.

Use something besides Nero. It does a good job of burning, but not much else.

You would have to detail your steps from VHS to MPEG- 2 for us to give any other usable information.

I would try TMPGEnc encoder or similar to encode to MPEG-2, then a program like TMPGEnc DVD Author to author the file and burn.

There are other freeware programs that can do this. Look in 'Tools' to the left. <<<<<<

EDIT: And I should mention, with your CPU speed and memory as stated in your profile, encoding may take some time. You would be advised to up your memory to 512Mb for some throughput increase.

    thanks for the quick response.

Yes, I used TMPGEnc to encode to mpeg-2. So I still don't know why it takes long?

What settings did you use in tmpgenc ?
Why are you using NeroVision instead of a real authoring tool ? Nerovision is notrious for re-encoding.
