  1. What program, if any, would allow a direct compression of a VOB file, without 'routing through' avi? Divx, perhaps? Just curious

  2. actually, shouldn't it be possible to just rip straight into divx? Why isn't there a program out there to do it? Is there? So confusing...

  3. there is a version of flaskmpeg that will rip straight to divx from DVD, but i wouldn't recommend using it. The Conversion takes a while, so its possible that you could do damage to the DVD drive from overheating.

With what compression do you want to compress the VOB files?

ReMpeg will compress the VOB files into a lower bitrate MPEG 2. All Divx encoding methods convert directly from VOB to a divx encoded AVI.

  4. what's the point of a divx-encoded avi? Smaller than your regular avi? Would, for the purpose of storing multiple movies on a computer or cds with at least tv quality, rm or asf be better? I haven't seen vcdhelp.com show a preference for a particular divx-encoding program, unless you count the codec for virtual dub. So, to rephrase: what's best: divx, asf, rm, etc, and how to go about it?

  5. blah...just encode the movie into SVCD...most of the other compression types just butcher the movie....unless you know DIVX very well...otherwise, SVCD still one of the better quality formats for dvd rips
