Neil Peart is a great drummer. Steve Gadd's solo on Steely Dan's Aja is my personal favorite drum "solo".
Phil Ehart of Kansas is amazing as well.
There is a guy from Nashville who recenlty played for Richard Marx named Tim Chewning who is absolutely amazing. What he does with his minimal drum set-up is....well....amazing.

Thats funny, yesterday we went to a Cristmas parade in a little town nearby. A narrow street put us within inches of the marching bands. A couple of the bands stopped and played right in front of where we were standing. We had a drum corp right in front of us at a couple of times. Like the second time or so, the drummers were pounding away and then broke out into their dance/parade moves/drill. The drill included slinging their drums around and making very quick facing turns. The big bass drums swinging so close to the crowd kind of freaked my four year out. ( I am talking six inches away from being hit by a drum or mallet)

It was an exillerating expeirence, you could definatly "feel the music". Those high school kids were giving it everything that they had. I had my cam but got so caught up in the event that I didn't even shoot any footage

I can think of a couple of one handed drummers that are better

Actually I would say that he is fairly accomplished and talented.

Drummers don't tend to be so much in the limelight but they are often the backbone of a band.

Anybody see that Tommy Lee goes to college? I don't watch much TV but I did catch a few snippets of him trying out for the marching band..... He sucked.... He couldn't march and play at the same time....

Best drummer ever was Keith Moon. Ginger Baker, Steve Gadd, and of course Buddy Rich are my favorites. Neil Peart is certainly way up there. I'd also say some of Nick Mason's fills are pretty awesome.

If I had to pick one it'd have to be Neil Peart as well. Their music is sooo complex and has so many tempo changes, yet it never sounds overly technical like Dream Theatre or something. That's all Peart.

Phil Collins is a great performer and its really incredible that he can play drums well and sing at the same time, but as a straight drummer I don't think he's that great.

One of the most underrated drummers is Stewart Copeland from the Police. Awesome stuff.

Even before he lost his arm I never thought Rick Allen of Def Leopard was all that great. Just a typical rock drummer. After he lost his arm he got even worse, understandably.

Steve Gadd is awesome -- you can see him of course on the Eric Clapton Live "One More Car One More Rider" DVD -- which is a must own DVD

i would have to agree also about neil , he is very highly respected in the industry and both he and copland lend their talents to a lot of new drummers ..

Drum lessons from age seven; sat in with Dizzy Gillespie at 11. Studied music at Eastman College, Rochester, playing in wind ensemble and concert band, and at nights in a club with Chick Corea, Chuck Mangione, Joe Romano and Frank Pullara.

After college, drafted into army and spent three years in a military band. After the army, gigged and worked with a big band in Rochester. 1972, formed a trio with Tony Levin and Mike Holmes, going to New York with it. The trio fizzled out, but Gadd began to work extensively as a studio musician.

He also played with Corea's first Return to Forever. 1970's and 1980's, toured internationally, recorded with Paul Simon and with Al Di Meola's Electric Rendezvous Band. By the end of the 1970's Gadd was the most in-demand and probably the most imitated drummer in the world.

Doesn't Gadd sometimes use two sticks in one or both hands? I recall reading that somewhere.

    Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater.

Say what you will about that band, but I have never heard a band that changes time signatures as effortlessly as they do.

Stewart Copeland is also a great drummer. Very underrated.

Perhaps the "greatest drummer" out there lives in obscurity... much like the "greatest band"... ??

I like Tommy & Marky Ramone for their unapologetic rock-solid beats.

Some hardcore/grindcore/black metal drummers are simply amazing! (But more obscure/underground).

Even more obscure, would be the immortal James Baker from Perth, Western Australia, who apparently is still rocking on - www.perthpunk.com ... Yo heard of "The Victims"? If so, you should listen to "The Geeks" too! Uncompromising punk rock,n,roll brother!

    :P

I've often said that for every musician you see on the stage making a living at it, there are many more who may even play much better who are not making a living playing music for any number of reasons...
