  1. Quick question. Can my NEC 3520A write to DVD-9 discs? I know I could probably find this out with a bit of digging, but I kind of need a quick answer to this, and I can't find one anywhere in my hurry.

If you look at the CD/DVD tray front cover, it says Dual Layer. This means it can write to Dual Layer DVDRs, aka DVD-9
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

The 3520 can write and read DVD+r DL but can not recognize DVD-r DL media. So yes, it can work with DVD9 discs but only the +r format.

Apparently it can write to DVD-RDL. I do remember hearing DVD-RDL was suppsoed to be supported by NEC with a firmware update after the drive was released. If it was, I'm not sure since I don't have one of these drives. This is a hacked firmware and you will void your warranty, and whether it's worth it is up to you.

Hacked firmwares can make your drives do all kinds of things it's not intended to. I do not recommend them to ever be used unless you have no cares about whether your drive dies or not. If the 3520 doesn't support your current burning media an upgrade to the latest 3550 is under $50.

My 3520 does a very nice job with +DL's(Verbatim), using Liggy & Dees hacked firmware.

And mine burns DVD+R DL's without any firmware updates, straight out of the box.

Not everything needs a firmware upgrade, but I woldn't dissuade anyone from going out and appying one for enhanced functionality, ROF

I'd never discourage this either. In fact I support updating to the latest official firmware before you attempt your first burn. All i said above was a warning that using hacked firmware is not always the best solution. It's better to use the latest officially supported firmware first.

  11. one of the fastest way is to put the media in the drive then before burning or pretend to burn would say put in the correct type of media or one with more space then you know if it supports or not.
