For those of us who happen to live in the southern parts of Sweden, and perhaps will be visiting the big outlet GeKås Ullared, make sure you pick up a spindle or 2 of MEDSTOR DVR-R 8x (sek 179 for 25) - they are in fact TYG02, ranked best media at nomorecoasters.

There are tons of off brand dvds with that code. They are all fakes. That does not mean they are no good. I used thousends of SONIC brand discs with that code. Infact they scan as Taiyo Yuden but,,,,,, alas they are not. However, they all have performed admirably. So if they perform well for you, meaning they burn, error scan and play perfectly then I really could care less about the media code.

The only time I ever check a media code is when I have a disc that fails to work properly. Other than that I could care less who makes it, which country it came from, or what media code it is.

So, how would one tell a fake TYG02 from the real thing?
Most bulk discs I've used as been CMC and AN3X.

Oh, I find it rather interesting - every bulk pack I buy, I check with DVDInfo Pro first thing.

And making sure you buy high quality media, which means knowing the media codes and being able to tell genuine media from low quality discs that "borrow" media codes, is the best way to avoid any disc failures. But hey, it's your money.

Best way is to show you a pic of the dye side: http://dvd-r.jpn.org/media/zoom/yuden_8xgoldback.jpg

All genuine TYG02 discs have a stamper code on them starting with GGxxxxxx. The last six digits (usually just the last three though) will vary by the batch, but that's the dead giveaway. Also, TY discs have that distinctive black ring. The stamper code is visible from the top of the disc but it will appear mirrored.

Off-brand TYG02 is a stolen code by that shithouse known as InfoSmart out of China. They use the default stamper codes of ANxx because they don't always use their own codes. Their own codes are often seen as ISO or INFOSMART. They have faked Maxell and TY and Mitsubishi so far.

BulkPaq uses Infosmart primarily, and either fake or legit CMC. This is why BulkPaq has earned the nickname BulkCrap.

Fake media is crap, the end. They use stolen codes because their own codes are supposedly not supported by all drives. But the honest observation is the media burns like crap regardless of code or drive. Junk is junk, no way around it. Stealing a code is deceptive, and most good stores avoid them.

SUPERMEDIASTORE.COM in the USA, and SVP.CO.UK in the UK, are reliable stores for legit discs. Both have vowed to not sell fake garbage.

Update: Well, either TYG02 is highly overrated, or this is indeed fakes, as these discs are the worst crap I've ever tried, and believe me, I've tried lots of crap!
Avoid like the plague. read errors galore all over the surface, even when burned at 2x ("rated" (what it says on the box) write speed 8x, even if DVDInfo says 2 or 4), and no more than 4.2 GB.
