    Why is it that dvd format movies from the manufacturer will play on just about any dvd player. But those burned on a home pc will not work on all players. Is the process, materials, encoding, etc. different?

    Process is different, and I think the materials (silver vs purple bottoms). Movie studio press their discs, where you BURN to the disc.
