I borrowed 2 DVDs from a friend of mine. The DVDs are 'The Silence of the Lambs' and 'Se7en'. Both the DVDs have DVD-9 label on the Cover tops. But after putting in the DVD-ROM on my PC, the capacity shown is below 4.7GB.

Does it mean that the DVDs are Single Layer DVDs i.e., DVD-5. If so, why are they labelled as DVD-9(which is supposed to contain Dual Layers). I used DVD Decrypter(in File Mode) to read the DVDs. Even it is showing size which is below 4.7GB.

    I've a serious doubt.

Is the DVD seller cheating his customers by labelling 4.7GB discs as DVD-9 ?

    or

Is it fact that DVD-9 need not always carry an 8GB size with Dual Layers ?

    or

Is my DVD drive incapable of reading the second layer ?

You are in breach of the forum rules and are being issued with a formal warning.

Does the dvd have 2 sides to it ,like on 1 side it's pan and scan and the other is widescreen? Lou

  3. In my experience, the DVDs I have come across that actually have the "DVD-9" symbol on the cover or on the disc are Chinese made boots. The ones I have seen were actually dual layer, but if it is a pirated copy, labelling accuracy is probably not a high priority.

about as incapable as you are of reading the site rules.

well this i a new low.

we usually either get people wanting to copy their friends commercial dvd's or wanting to know how to make a pirated copy of movie they downloaded or "acquired" as they like to say. This has both.

    you should be proud.

Both DVDs are single sided. 'The Silence of Lambs' is NTSC Widescreen-Non Anamorphic. 'Se7en' is NTSC Widescreen-Anamorphic.

Both the DVDs are playing well. There are no playing/ripping problems at all. But, the only doubt is how can a DVD labelled as DVD-9 contain only a single layer.

    As Rowman said

may be the DVD is a pirated copy. But, I'm still not sure. How can I check whether the DVD is pirated or not ?? Is there any trick or method - will there be some kind of a logo or number code on the DVD..... something like that ??

Please review the site rules. Questions can only be answered about backing up DVDs that you own. Not ones you have rented or borrowed.
