I am looking at my friend's old pc, when I start it it says Invalid system disk, Replace the disk and then press any key.

I can enter dos with my win 98 startup disk.

I loaded a new window xp cd and it will not even start, I even changed to boot from cd-r first.

It sound like a bad hard-drive? What do you guys think?

Are you using a startup disc with cd rom support?

I know Win98SE and higher have that option.

When you say that you can enter DOS with the win98 boot disk, do you mean that you can access the C drive of the computer in question?

If that is the case then all you should have to do is do a sys c: command to copy the system files back on to the hard drive, then it should boot just fine
