The huming or buzzing sound is related to something not setup correctly on your pc , and not the cards fault .

However , it is possible , that you have the card either in the wrong slot on the motherboard , or it's been positioned where it is sharing resource's of another device .

If agp engaged , pci slot 1 cannot be used .
This even applies , if onboard agp is being used , it still shares with pci1 .

Pci 2 and pci 3 both share , so only use one .

Pci 4 and pci 5 both share , again as before .

Yes , I have seen complete stuffup's from dell .

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

Check your cable feeding the audio to pc for any conditional problems .

The last thing would be the audio chipset on the system not performing as expected , update to latest driver's for system .

Dont use any form of splitter cable's , this will cause this annoying buzzing sound .

Feed video to video in from source .
Feed audio to linein from source using seperate cable's .. the correct way to do this for all cards .

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

As for capturing , neodvd has some quirk's too watch out for , it dosent say what a particular choosen capture choice will display as , only the bitrate it will maintain ... some funny people over there have weird idea's as to what sp , lp , ep mode's really are .

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Ulead video studio require's a very fast pc to get the best out of it during capture's .

Nero's capture is just as good as neodvd , but atleast nero give's you more info as to what you are about to do .

On pc's running 2000+ cpu's , built around the idea of bottle neck removal , there are no problem's ... no dropped frame's , no audio sync issue's .

It's just a pity the card's come with a "cut down" version of the software , other than that , the card's capture quality is very hard to beat ... beaten by it's brother , the usb2 unit , which I own both of .

FWIW, usually hum comes from the audio source, or more precisely, from interferance & loss of signal quality. This doesn't contradict what Bjs posted at all -- quite correct that often the PC itself supplies that interferance.

Ground loop's been talked about in a thread or 3 recently. Basically it's when the ground of the cable (from cable, ant etc.) isn't a true ground any longer, so you have a small voltage present. Jay Rose has some decent articles & books on this, and it's often a reason for light pipe &/or balanced cabling. There are several things you can try if you google a bit, including a simple device JR talks about using a couple of cable transformers I think.

Otherwise, lighting dimmer switches can be a big prob., as can flourescent lighting, and even power strips. Sometimes the signal's degraded & the hum introduced before you even get the audio signal, so filtering & amps might help. Cable & sat boxes when decoding digital can also introduce hum.
