IIRC, on Macs, you can play WMV's up to v8 with MS WMP, but not v9 files.
Thankfully, the Flip4Mac apps have a WMV Quicktime component that works with v7,8,9, and 9pro files (not sure about DRM though). Being a QT component, you can open and convert to other QT video type, etc. That's probably what you want.

Flip4Mac's stuff DOES NOT, for the record work with
M$ DRM. I'm still patiently waiting for some way
to get it to at least get around the HardWare
requirement bug the DRM places within protected files...
perhaps this will happen once Intel Macs arrive...?

Has anyone with WMV Player Pro or WMV Studio upgraded
    the Player to v.20?
    Did it invalidate your license?
Did it offer greater support for wmv3 files?

I honestly didnt see that one coming. I hate making Windows Media content at work. I push folks toward Real multimedia before I give up and go Windows.

FYI: WMP 9 for OS X does support WMV9 file.

    re:Mac WMP9 for OSX...
    WMV9--yes, w/DRM--no >>>edit: Only 1st DRM version<<<<
WMA9 (CBR)--yes, (VBR)--no (and I have made MANY VBR programs)

Not what I'd call full support.

Sure hope the Flip4Mac component will fully support it (but I doubt it reRM)

DRM will probably be a BIG no...M$ is firming up the DRM
so they can start positioning key players to their cause to
go head to head with Apple for the battle for the Living Room.

So far MTV/Viacom is on board, and they have already stated
it's WM11 content, and that Macs ( and by extension Mac iPod
    owners) will be locked out.

Nothing on OS X will play WMV7 or WMV8 with DRM either. There is no OS X mechanism for handling the license keys and decryption and never has been.

I'm not gonna argue this strongly, as I don't have this product (Flip4Mac)--or really need it--but it does EXPLICITLY say on their (either MS's or Flip4Mac's) website that WM DRM version #1 is supported.
IIRC, they are up to v3 now. Could be that WMV7 files can only support v1 of DRM, WMV8 files can support v1 or v2 of DRM, and WMV9 files can support v1-3. MS will have to clarify on this.

    Corn, your 1/3 right:
    Windows Media DRM
    Summary:
Version 1 was released in April 1999, and supported basic business rules such as expiration dates. Version 2 was released in January 2003 and is also known as version 7.x and 9, to keep sync with the equivalent versions of Windows Media Player. Version 3, better known as DRM v10, was released in 2004.
and since M$ is doing more blackbox encoding with WM10,
we may,on the Mac side, have reached our limitation
with WM DRM. That is, until some enterprising soul
decides to make a linux crack for us.

Hmm, apparently decryption is supported for WMV1/WMV7 files although I can no longer find one to perform a test and I don't recall it working when I attempted previously (years ago.) The MS page does not mention when the support was added to WMP for Mac... but it is listed for WMP 7.1 for OS 9 as well.
