ffmpeg, wmv and windows media player

i had some weirdness happen
i tried converting my wmv into a new wmv with a better audio stream but for the life of me couldnt get it to play on media player. myvid.wmv works on windows media player. I used ffmpeg rev12665 from this site --> http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/ffmpeg/

and could not get it working. I decided to try this which should reproduce the exact same file (or close enough)
ffmpeg -i myvid.wmv -vcodec copy -acodec copy test1.wmv

test1.wmv also does not work. VideoLan was able to play any video i produce with ffmpeg

what options can i use to have this work with windows media player?
also, were can i DL the latest binary for windows?
