I have a problem converting my mpg file to xvid using virtualdub mpeg2. I recorded a program on a dvd recorder. I took the VOB files and saved it to my hard drive. I used Mpeg Video Wizard to remove all the commercials and make it into an mpg file. I think the mpg file it is saved, the quality is "dvd long play" because when I play it on vlc, it says 21 minutes, but overall it's like 43 minutes. This is after it cut the commercials. Anyways, I used the guide https://www.videohelp.com/avi2divx.htm to guide me through my conversions, but when I click save to avi, it gives me a popup message "No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format. (source format tag:2000). Please help, and tell me where to click and what, because most of the terminologies that are used in this forum, i have no idea. Like Interlacing, demux, bit rate, stuff like that, I have absolutely no idea what these words mean, but I see it a lot in these guides. THANKS!!!

Uh... there's a glossary link on the upper left hand corner...

soruce format tag 2000 = AC3. (Download/install Gspot, then View / Codec Database / Audio, and scroll down to 2000). That means you need to install the AC3 playback filter. AC3filter is one, or you can use FFDShow (I think).

I would convert to xvid with autogk or avi.net.

Or get the ac3 acm and you can decode ac3 in virtualdubmpeg2.

Yep, I've resorted to doing this with avi.net. It's just that much simpler, and qualitywise, I'm not clever enough to tweak the settings using VDub to get better output.

I can't even get avi.net to work. downloaded it with the link on here, installed it, and then double clicked the icon avi.net and I get an error message saying: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click OK to terminate the application." Any ideas? Thanks...

Do you have .net framework 2.0?
AutoGK is an alternative too, as Mr B says.

what is .net framework 2.0? Is it freeware that I can download that makes avi.net work? I'm a little skeptical about autogk because i heard it has spyware or adware on it. Is it true? Thanks.

.net framework is what makes applications built with MS latest development package tick. Freely available from Microsoft.
No, AutoGK doesn't contain any spy/adware to my knowledge.
