    The reason there are so many solutions is because there is no agreement on which is the "best". The best solution is the one that works for YOU and gives YOU the results YOU want. Try some of the tools listed, following some of the guides available, and see which solution YOU think is the "best".

    What's the problem being solved? Are those 3 different problems and you're looking for 3 solutions? Or are you asking which of those 3 solutions fits whatever problem you're having?

    3 distincly different methods for these three alternatives:
    XVID -> DVD: divx2dvd (for a oneclick solution) or many other more elaborate processes. (See convert left)
    VCD -> DVD: Just author with TDA or DVD-Lab
    SVCD -> DVD: SVCD2DVDMPG or SVCD2DVD

    These one click solutions such as divx2dvd

    are they not plagued with problems such as sync problems and bed re-encodes?

    Well, there's always a trade off between ease of use and end quality - anything else would be a miracle!

    Wouldn't "best" be a Rank flying spot scanner transfer connected to a top quality hardware MPeg2 encoder?

    All of those methods you describe are in the mud of quality.

    Better to say which is "better"

    For Divx or Xvid to DVD, you can try TMPEnc if you do not need the encoding speed. As for VCD/SVCD, you can author straight to DVD with authoring software such as DVD-Lab. Since the VCD/SVCD video quality is not great, you will not get much quality improvement even with filter or the best MPEG encoder.
