    i go to the System Config. Utility thru msconfig. I click the StartUp tab to see what programs are used during startup. I have unchecked some programs that i know i dont need to run, but ihave no idea about. see if you can tell to leave checked or remove: (HP pavilion laptop)

    1. programfiles/ati technologies/ati conrol panel\atiptaxx.exe
    2. programfiles\hpq\notebookutilities\hptasks.exe
    3. programfiles\hpq\one-touch\one-touch.exe
    4. programfiles\synaptics\syntp\syntplpr.exe
    5. \synaptics\syntp\syntpenh.exe
    6. carpserv.exe
    7. programfiles\hp\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe
    8. programfiles\quickime\qttask.exe -atboottime
    9. %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
    10. programfiles\hp\hpsoftwareupdate\hpwuschd2.exe
    11. progra~1\common~1\adobe\calibr~1\adobeg~1.exe

    can any of these be removed?

    you can uncheck 2,7,8,9,10,11
    those are off the top of my head you can check them against this database
