I'm pretty sure ALL recordable DVDs out there only have a shade of purple on them. There is no silver.

DVDRs will always be Purple (shade of purple will vary from one manufacturer to another)

You want Silver, then you're looking at pressed discs.

By the way, why is the colour of the disc so important?

I have used 100's of the "PURPLE"(dvd+r) discs and they are all good. MCC, TY & RICOHJPN. Why do you think the "PURPLE" ones are not good? All the dvdr media is PURPLE I do believe?

If you have $$$$$$ I guess in theory, you could by a dvd pressing machine to get the silver bottoms? Good luck with that......

Sorry for the coloring I'm bored.....

Granted, in the long run it probably isn't important... but I do wonder, just as a point of technical interest: Why can't they do silver-bottom DVD-R media? After all, CD-R media originally started out with opaque blue or green dyes back in the day, but nowadays most of them are silver-bottom discs with colorless dyes, so obviously it's possible to make a relatively colorless organic dye...

So is it really impossible to do the same with DVD-R media? Or is it just that they haven't gotten around to doing it yet?

CD-R is not colorless. The dyes are just very pale in certain lighting, mostly indoor lights. Change the temperature (K) of the light slightly, and the blue and greens show through quite easily. Those are just the way the chemicals came out, they did not try to make them silver. They still use AZO and cyanine bases, so you still get those tint colors in the silver chemicals.

DVD media uses a chemical base that ends up purple in color. There is no conspiracy here, it's just the color of the chemicals. In fact, they can tint brown-ish purple (organic), blue-ish purple (AZO), and pink-ish purple (phythlocyanine), because of the chemicals.

Sort of how carrots are orange (mostly) and bananas are yellow (usually). Just how it worked out.

There is also no reason to change the color. The only people that complain about color are pirates trying to sell fakes, or superficial people that think discs "need" to be a certain color. Changing colors requires adding pigments to the dye, or using colored plastics. These both harm the longevity and quality of the discs.

How did you come to the conclusion that the discs were suddenly "like crap". That's unlikely, I suggest you read this: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=248839

Something else is wrong here, it's probably not the discs.

Since that pretty much describes every DVD recordable disc made, you need to be a little more specific.

What's the specific model of your LG burner?
What's the make and model of the discs? (i.e., Maxell DVD-R 4X)
More important, what's the media code? (i.e., RITEKG04)
You can use DVDInfo to determine the media code.

Armed with specific information you can visit the link DVD Media and see which media is known to work well with your particular burner, and which media to avoid.
