  1. Just wondering if I will have the fastest computer here for a while. Demuxing and rendering should be a near joy. I should REALLY start to enjoy editing video now! The dual 533 G4 lasted almost 5 years but it was time for the "old girl" to go.

Should be here the 22nd! WOOT!

  2. While I haven't ordered one myself, I'd be happy to stand around drooling when you get it. I suppose it would have to be virtual drooling. Which model did you get? Which video card? Make sure to get Apple Care before your year is up. The first G5 adopteres learned that leason all too well. Many are stil waiting for freeze problems to be solved by a firmware update.9 Do you have any PCI cards that need replacing?

Would buy one, if I had enough money. Maybe when I graduate and get higher salary... So, good old Sawtooth (450Mhz) has to do it :/

  5. Well since I was blowing money anyway... I decided WTH and got the GF 7800 card. I "only" have one (1) 22" display so that was more than enough (yes I had to woof up the $$$ for the ADC to DVI adaptor), 1 Gig of RAM I got the ECC memory (for no real reason), and an additional 500GB SATA drive to hold "just video".

I will probably order another Gig of memory (not from Apple) when Aperture gets here as I have been working with a lot of RAW photos lately. But that app will not ship till Dec.

I was rendering a video in FCP the other day and saw "Rendering: Estimated 21 minutes" I just smiled and walked away knowing that would seldom be seen again. At least when I was working with SD footage. I am sure High Def will suck my CPU's all back up. :P

I will be sure and make a desktop video with Snap ProX and make you guys drool.

Sorry Terryj someone called dibs on it already, but you are 2nd in line.

  7. I went in and started adding on all the extras I'd want - RAM, Graphics card ect , 2 - 23" Displays (no software). My total came to just under $23,000!!

The dual 30" displays and memory will kill ya!

Being I work for the Govt. (top right on the Apple store) I got a good discount plus Apple software is like %50 off. Still came to +$4400 with the upgrade to Final Cut Studio.

  9. There's been a lot of discussion ovr the past few months on the macintouch.com site about the Dell monitors, which are much less expensive than the cinema displays, and of equal or better viewing quality—plus they rotate. And are uglier.

The Dell monitors are amazing. I own a 24" widescreen Dell, and I couldn't be more happy with it. People on the various forums keep talking about how ugly the Dell monitors are -- but I suspect that most of them have never seen one apart from pictures on websites.

I've never had anyone look at my Dell monitor and say, "Wow, that's ugly". In fact, I usually get the opposite response, especially when the monitor is turned on. People gape, and say things like, "Holy Crap, that's awesome!"

Now, I'll admit that the Dell isn't a work of art in the same way the Apple displays are, but the Dells are nicely designed monitors with a more conservative "business-like" approach to styling.

As for quality, well, I believe the Dell monitors trump the more-artistic looking Apple displays (not by a lot, but noticeably nonetheless).

I have the luxury of working near a dude at work who has a large Apple cinema display. That monitor used to make me drool with envy. It always seemed so bright and crisp and beautiful.

Well, after having my Dell for a few months, I now look at the Apple display in a different way. It's still a beauty to behold, but it doesn't quite look as bright or as sharp as it used to.

And with the money I saved buying the Dell, I can literally plaster my office with designer furniture and fancy accessories to help recoup the artistry I lost by selecting the Dell over the Apple.

    Keith.

but do you/did you have any Colorsync Calibration
issues with Photoshop CS, FCP, or the like?
    just curious....
We use a mix of both the Dell 17" and the Apple 23"
at work, and to most who use them, the color calibration is easier
( on the eyes maybe) on the Apple's then the Dells...?

I'm not running on a Macintosh, so I don't know how the performance would be using FCP, but my monitor has not had any colour calibration issues.

I can't speak for the 17" Dells though. Dell's more advanced LCD technology does not come into play until you get into their 19" and above models.

  13. I plan to get a dual dual in Jan. Id like to see some timings on Streamclip for a 800mb file tx to 3ivix, mpeg2.

I don't own FCP but have express 1.

I also have Samsung monitors which might be the same as the upper Dells and were cheaper with good rebates and NO dead pixel guarantees.

those who get dual duals in this forum might report back to us on some timings or where we can get that info when they come out.

unfortunately that means I hve tolook into new PCIe cards for cableTV and HDTV.

might leave one on by G4dual and worik that as network computer.

    good luck!!

  14. Well I finally got the Beast!

There was a little shipping delay but Apple credited me $125 dollars. Turns out when I changed my order to include the GeForce 7800 they had my order on 'hold' and never took it out of that status. So it was delayed until I yelled at the right person :P

The machine is S-W-E-E-T and you can read about my experiences with it on the iMovie News blog below.
