I'm fairly new to this guys so I'll try to cover everything (hee hee). First let me say that I have a pretty good computer...3.2GHz, 512DDR Ram Hyperthreading, 128Mb nVidia card etc so there are no computing problems (WinXP SP2). I also have at least 16GB of free space on my PC
I have tried converting various downloaded movies(700Mb to 1400Mb in size) from AVI (divx or xvid) to DVD using DIKO, DVD Santa, the Film machine and svcs2dvd among others. I don't want to use several programs to convert files, just one so please don't ask me to run 3 programs to convert a file!
So far my results are poor. It seems DIKO and SVCD2DVD encode the file okay, but both programs seem to cut the film off near the end. Why?
DVD Santa appears to encode the whole file, but the second half (it was two avi files joined) has no audio, yet when I play the AVI file in WMP10 it works fine...audio and all.
The Film Machine just errors the file out for some reason and won't complete the encoding.
The AVI is from a good source (the DiAMOND group or the DoNE group) so I don't know why I am having all these problems.
I used to use DIKO v.076 quite a bit until it started cutting off the end of the movies, so I started trying other AVI to DVD programs.
The newer DIKO Free version 2 doesn't work at all and in fact crashes my computer everytime it is run. All the other freeware/trialware programs I have tried are the latest versions.
Can anyone help? At the very least tell me why DIKO and SVCD2DVD are cutting the file off?

Third - While your computer appears powerful, 16 gig is not alot of space when working with video. If possible, I would suggest adding another large hard-drive.
Having said all that, I don't use any of the programs you've listed and really can't help you much, unless you are willing to give up on the all-in-ones."Shut up Wesley!" -- Captain Jean-Luc Picard

Just drop then into VSO DivxToDVD ( Free ) and it will make a DVD, no menu for you. Also next please refrain from ever mentioning "downloaded movies" even if from a legal source, it still will sound as if it is Warez.

The term "Downloaded Movie" makes me not want to answer. Secondly as already mentioned, using one hard drive (your primary drive and only drive) is not a good idea at all. Lastly there are no all in one solutions to working with video. Sometimes it takes 2 or more programs to get the end result. Reword yor post and provide more data concernin your videos source etc by running them through GSpot.

I'm confused as to why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. specifically why SVCD2DVD and DIKO v.076 would convert the files just fine, but simply cut off the last part of the movie. Again Ive played the file through WMP10 with no problems as an AVI file, so I know the files contains the end of the movie(with credits etc.) -
I figured you would get your hand slapped for using the term "downloaded movies" ...
Anyways ... the programs I use are
VSO DivxToDVD ... no menu but will convert to a DVD format ... works well with avi videos with variable audio bitrates.
and Nero Vision Express 3... you create the menu and converts to a DVD format ... works well with avi videos with variable audio bitrates.
Nero Vision Express ... if you are using Nero to burn your DVDs ... you probably have it.
Nero updated their software and there is a Nero Vision Express 4 ... out but version 3 works just fine.
As for a larger or an extra harddrive ... you can use an USB harddrives. At work ... during my slack time ... I have my Dell 5150 Laptop out and a Panasonic DVD Burner and four harddrives [mounted in USB external enclosures] ... the size of my HDs are 250 gb ... 250 gb ... 200 gb and a 80 gb ... all this stuff is sitting out on a desk in the staff lounge.
The USB external enclosures I use ... are at CompUSA ... $40 bucks and support up to 400 gb HDs ... on sale quite often for $30 bucks. I use BYTEEC external enclosures for my Panasonic and my Pioneer DVD burners.
My job ?? .... I am a Resident Client Supervisor ... ??? huh ??? ... I am a counselor/security monitor for a bunch of drug addicts on State Parole and they are staying at our facility to find work and learn to live without using drugs.

corwin1,
You'd do a lot better with a good thread title. Many people just pass over threads entitled "help" or "question", so you won't stand as much chance as you normally would of getting an answer. Also, it helps users who have a similar problem to search for and find their solution. To edit your title, go to your first post in this thread (making sure you are logged in) and press "Edit" - it's a button above the text. You can then change the title.
As far as those "downloaded movies" go, I hope they aren't copyrighted.

Cobra

Get your hands dirty and leave these one-click wonders and super shell programs behind. If you wan't to get the best quality (aside from skipping downloaded material altogether, as it is always over-compressed), learn virtualdub, avisynth and an encoder of your choice.
Avisynth and/or virtualdub will allow you to apply filters that will smooth out artifacts, sharpen images etc. You can then frameserve these to a decent encoder where you can set the correct bitrate and you won't bet compounding the artifacts. Yes, it is more complex, takes longer to set up and longer to encode, but I would put my output up against anything DVD Santa or it's ilk can produce, confident that mine will be substantially better.
If, however, you need a quick and dirty solution, VSO's DivxtoDVD would be my choice.Read my blog here.
