What I use is a inexpensive ATI Radeon 9550 AGP video card with a ATI DVI to Component adapter.

    http://shop.ati.com/product.asp?sku=2537967

But if you are getting a plasma TV, it may have HDMI or other types of inputs that may be easier to set up, in case you want to use the component-in for your DVD player. I use a component switch box instead for the different inputs to a HD video projector.

  3. Only with converter can that be done?Arene't there any cards that have hdmi/dvi and component inputs/outputs?

Cause by using a converter in fact you lose quality while transfering the signal from digital to analogue right?

I'm not aware of any losses, but I just have component input on my projector.

But here's a link to PC magazine for some video cards. For Video Outputs, select 'Component'. A lot are PCI-E, not AGP. They are a little pricey.

  5. Ok will check them and report back, thanx.

EDIT:Ok i checked them and you're right the prices are crazy!

What's that column that says dvi output and t=it has types 0-4 and dual dvi, what does that mean?

BTWvi is that slot that like a serial one?I thought dvi was i really tiny, one like mini usb shaped.

I checked one of the cards having component output but i only see the dvi outputs i don't see any component ones.

DVI is what to use. If your card has component, it's still A/D conversion - I doubt if there'd be any difference from using an external DVI to component converter.

  7. I want both component and dvi.If it has component, then i connect it to a component source and there's no conversion.

Same thing with dvi,i connct to a dvi input.

I want both dvi and component input and output for tha graphic card.

Yes there is, but internal in the graphics card.

  9. You mean that the source of the signal is digital and a conversion is made to be carried through the component cable which is an analogue way of transfering data?

Exactly. But OTOH, this has been done "for ages" by graphics cards - not until recently, has there been any digital output.

  11. Ok thanx and what about the dvi types?Dual dvi is when it has two dvi? What about the types? What aretype 1 through 4 for dvi?And as for dvi is it only output?

AFAIK, DVI is only for output. I think the '0-4' is just the number of DVI sockets. You will see dual DVI on the list also. I assume dual in that case may mean separate DVI signals.

Here's a link to a DVI connector page:

    http://www.interfacebus.com/Design_Connector_Digital_Visual_Interface_DVI_Bus.html

Component connectors (RCA type) take up a lot of space. And there's not much room on a PCI card backplate. They may be using a different socket on the card and a adapter to bring the component hookups out to a external box or block.

Be aware a lot of those cards are PCI-E that is not compatible with a regular PCI motherboard.

  13. I have an old ATI all in one 9700 pro it has dvi out put, one thing to consider some of these DVI cables long enough to reach your TV could cost you 50% of your video card. Digital cables are very expensive.

ATI will steer you to the analog componet approach (9550up + HDTV adapter) and for practical purposes I go along with that. HDMI inputs are limited in number and already called for by the future HDTV tuner and HD DVD player. If the broadcast record flag gets passed*, you will need the HDMI input just to receive HDTV from a tuner. HDMI switch boxes and cables are extremely expensive and these may not work with HDCP encrypted media. http://www.kvm-switches-online.com/ext-hdmi-241n.html

Component analog works fine, uses $20 cables for short lengths and can be switched cheaply http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BVIBGI/qid=1133898039/sr=8-7/ref=pd_bbs_7/102-303...onics&v=glance

So reserve HDMI for HDTV tuner and HD DVD player
Use Analog component for computer, HDV camcorder. DVD Recorder and DVD player

    * Broadcast flag links.

  15. What's an hdtv tuner?

As for the hd dvd player I've already ordered one.

And as forHigh Definition (HDTV) 4-Way Switcher - Component/S-Video/Video/Audio product,
how do you connect it to the pc?Is it a better solution than the dvi to component converter?

And one last thing,if i send a video signal from my tvs component output can i capture it with the pcs component input?Lets say a tv programm or ps2,or whatever the tv monitor is showing.

That is what you use to tune a HDTV signal from over the air DTV, Cable or DBS.

You will have a long wait unless you buy the Japanese Blu-Ray. Upscalers are just looking at the same ol' 720x480 data.

First, I have not seen a HDTV with a component output. What model?
Second, I have not seen a consumer PC capture card with a HDTV component input. What model?

  17. I'm talkning about a plasma screen with a component nput output that i'm planning to buy (possibly Sony/Samsung) and the component input device you gave in the link on your first post.

  18. Ok since things have got a little bit confusing plz let me rephrase.

What are by your opinion the best and most reachable approaches to:

A)Transfer video from the pc to an external monitor (TV).

B)Transfer video from an external source (Monitor, dvd player, and whatnot) to the computer.

That depends on the TV. For a plasma EDTV or HDTV the choices are digital connection (DVI-I or HDMI display card outputs at 1080i, 720p or 480p resolutions) or analog component Y, Pb, Pr (also at 1080i, 720p or 480p resolutions).

Special display cards are required such as the ATI 95xx to 98xx or pci exprss X series. Future cards will use the HDMI connector.

Some HDTV monitors accept computer resolutions over DVI-D outputs but that is less common. S-Video is the low end common standard.

Typical existing solutions are analog composite or S-Video. Tuner cards can also accept and decode RF from TV, cable or DBS.

Analog component (Y, Pb, Pr) computer inputs are expensive. IEEE-1394 is somertimes supported for DV or D-VHS (MPeg2_TS) digital transfer.

Other ways include network connections (e.g. Eithernet, IEEE-1394, USB2 and wireless).

  20. As for b i believe that analog composite and rf are not good.As for s-video and component, what choices do i have?

Also i think my latop alredy has an 1394 input for dv.How can i connect something from the TV to that input?

Most capture cards and devices have S-Video inputs. S-Video is analog Y/C at SD resolution.

I'm not aware of a TV that supports IEEE-1394 out. It is possible.

    Nope

This is a laptop? You probably have S-Video out.
If you want to capture S-video and audio in, and if you have USB2, you would need an external capture device like a Win TV PVR USB2http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/products/data_pvrusb2.html
but it will be standard analog TV, not HDTV.
