Is it possible to convert the wmv format to avi or xvid? Or has microsoft prevented all converting programs from working with these files.

You might try VirtualDub-MPEG-2 as the newest version seems to support WMV. Another program I have used in the past is Stoik Video Converter.

With a Xvid codec installed, VD-MPEG-2 would be my choice because of all the filters available.
