  1. I'm in the UK.

I obtained a set of VOB files which contained a backup copy of a recent "clay-mation" movie about a man and a dog, in torrent format. It has a single, English audio track.

Burned to DVD, great, worked fine on my DVD home player. So I did a copy up for my mate, who is Hungarian and has a Hungarian-bought TV set in his house.

Here's the bit that's got me. The music on the soundtrack of this film works perfectly on his system, but there is no speaking on it. None. All you get is the music. The same disc works fine in my player, and on my PC.

Do Hungarian televisions have something in them that detects English language and removes it from a soundtrack?

I have the same problem if I make up a DVD from my own MiniDV footage using MovieMaker v2 and send it over to friends in Hungary. They get the pictures fine, but the soundtrack is entirely stripped ...

    What's that about, then?

Cheers for any help or ideas ...

It might be that their DVD players are set to play the Hungarian soundtrack by default. As there isn't one, they get no sound. They could try setting the default soundtrack to English to see if that works.

  3. Nah, that can't be it. I thought something like that with the guys in Hungary, but this time i have direct access to the machines involved. The DVD player was bought here in the UK, it's only the TV itself that is Hungarian.

There's only one soundtrack stream on the DVD - as I said, it came from a torrent download.

The strange thing is that the music plays fine, just not the spoken word part of the soundtrack. It's just as if someone had stripped all the dialogue out.

We took the DVD up to the guy's PC, and it played fine on there. And, as I say, it works fine in my player.

Honestly, if I hadn't seen it myself I wouldn't have believed it.

  4. One channel was recorded out of phase and he has a mono TV.

  5. Nope - big fancy stereo TV. That's why he brought it over from Hungary instead of getting a new one here.

And - as said - the soundtracks on my home-made DVDs don't work over there. Pictures yes, sound no.

    Ah well.

    Cheers anyway ...

I bet if you were patient, and waited until this particular film was made legally available on a commercial disk, it would quite happily play. Read the forum rules.

  8. Correct. I thought, however, that it was an interesting problem, certainly something I hadn't come up against before ... at the very least, something to be aware of for people, and at best I thought someone may have an explanation.

No big deal - don't get your knickers in a twist.

    Hi mate

it's no big deal for you but it is to some here . It's just the fact you might as well say what film it was with your initial description of the movie. Even that isn't really welcome around here as it's still close but not breaking the rules regarding warez. Some choose not to help people who think they are being clever by not naming the movie but don't be surprised if you get a friendly nudge towards the rules if you do . All you have simply done is put a question mark over your future posts and you may find some people reluctant to help out

anyway, I'd say its something to do with the DVD Audio format and the DVD player being used rather than the TV

    cheers 8)

p.s. I'm untwisting my knickers now and I hope you see the friendly side of this post

You don't actually say what format the audio is. Perhaps it is mpeg1-layer2, and his player can't play it. If it was AC3 it should be universally playable.

(btw, I don't wear knickers for that very reason )
