  1. I've been using DVD Shrink 3.2 to backup just the main movie which works pretty well. The problem is when I view them in my player (a cheap Nextecc from CC) it always shows the closed captions. There doesn't appear to be anyway to turn this off. Is there a way to strip out the closed captions? Thanks!

Have you unchecked the subpictures in Shrink? That's all you should need to do.

Turn off subtitles on your player's menu.

Any Movie I have ever backed up with Shrink where I didn't remove the subtitles comes up by default when I play the movie. So I just make it a priority to remove them all. I don't have any need for them anyway.

  5. Thanks for the responses. Yes, I have unchecked all the subtitles and subpictures in Shrink. The only thing I leave checked is one audio selection.

ROF, I tried to do what you suggested but there was no option to turn off subtitles.

There should be a subtitle button on the remote for your DVD player (although maybe not). If there is, pressing that button will usually go through all the available subtitles on the disk and then to 'off'.

Also, when you reauthor in DVDShrink, if you right click on the movie after dragging it into the reauthor, then click on 'Set Default Streams', you can check 'Hide substream' so the player should default to subtitles off.

Could it be that the subtitles are actually embedded? I've seen some discs that were intended for a specific market (the US) where the (English) subs were embedded (a German movie, IIRC).

  8. In DVDshrink go to re-author mode select the main title then un-check all the subtitles. Also un-check any audio you can do without.

  9. I've never seen a DVD player w/o a subtitle function key on the remote or in the player setup. According to the "NexxTech" site they do.
Another cause is your TV may have the "closed captions" set to on, since you stated CC and not subtitles. Check both.

  10. Thanks everyone. BobK and NiteLite, I found the subtitle button! Unfortunately, my Nexxtech player decided to crap out on me so I couldn't try that. I put in a disk and it tried to read it, then said no disk. The drawer won't open and I can't even turn the power off. Anyway, I got a Philips DVP642/37 yesterday and it all my disks work great in it. My mom still has the Nexxtech, so one of the Nexxtech's so I'll try it on that one when I'm there next time.

Also, BobK, I will do as you suggested and hide the substreams. I didn't know I could do that!

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to reply. Until I can get back down to my mom's to try your suggestions out, I guess we can call this matter resolved.
