  1. Every once in a while ill download a file. Ill want to edit it for what ever reason. VirtualDub sometimes gives me this gibberish about "not supported: Microsoft owns US patent" etc.

How do I edit these files? What drives me crazy is that this file has absolutely nothing too do with MS. Not going to get vista just for this reason...

Anyway, anyone know how to edit these files?

    asf files ?

Look in the Virtualdub area of the Tools section for a version that handles asf files.
    Read my blog here.

    ASF and/or WMV.

    Virtualdub 1.3c supports it:

... as does the latest version of virtualdub-MPEG2:

    If in doubt, Google it.

You will probably have trouble with newer wmv files and 1.3c. VirtualDub-MPEG2 should handle these better.

asf/wmv not have anything to do with MS?

VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

  6. Install AVISynth and use VirtualDubMod. When you open the file use the pulldown at the bottom of the File Open dialog to select DirectShowSource. This will work for just about any file that Windows Media Player can play.

Appears to be working fine to me.
You just need to install WMV9 VCM or enable WMV3 support in ffdshow.

Tnx, both of them gave errors. But at least one was actually editable.
