okay, i am new here, so i hope this is the right forum.
I have some .avi's that are dvd rips. I can play them fine on VLC player but i want to be able to play them on QT so i can export them as ipod movies using moviesformypod. MFMP only works if the .avi file can be played in QT.
When i tried to play the files in QT, there was no sound. The .avi is encoded using codec a52. So i downloaded DivX 5.2.1 and also installed the ac3 codec to try and fix it. Now there is some sound, but it's very choppy and drops out after a few seconds. I have QT 7.0.3, and mac osx 10.3.9 nd i was wondering if anyone could help me at all.
    Thank you!

I believe the AC3 codec doesn't work with QT 7.02 and later

    Anyone, is that right?

There is a re-install for QT 7.01, but you'll have to do the search.

Otherwise you may use an encoder that doesn't rely on QT to decode the source (ffmpeg X comes to mind)

    Good luck, sdm.

    yes,
although removing 3ivx for some and only using the DIVX 5.21 codec
and the AC3 component has worked. I would simply use VLC
until Apple releases and official fix.

I wonder if Apple doesn't want AC3 playback in QT? Don't ask me why.

I haven't upgraded to QT 7.03 because I like being able to open video files in QT player. I really have never liked VLC.

I'm in the process of ripping/encoding all my dvds for use on my eyehome. (.avi containing Xvid and ac3 has been my choice. Avi/xvid for wide compatablity and ac3 (5.1) because I couldn't bear to lose surround sound).

After encoding I open 'em up in QT player and check a/v sync and video quality.

Sidenote: Mpeg streamclip opens now opens .movs and .avis containing ac3. And its a pretty capable editor too.

Maybe the author of streamclip could make a new QT component to play ac3?

I think I'll see if upgrading to qt 7.03 and removing 3ivx changes anything - like you suggest terryj. I'd like to try downloading itms videos.

Try Divx Doctor. Sometimes audio is compressed in the AVI's and this app will correct that issue.

And most times DIVX Doctor will dump AC3 tracks
    because it can't handle them...

I also use ffmpedX (v0.0.9s, not 9t), and MPEG Streamclip for conversions that sometimes prove difficult. Sometimes I can "save out" a converted audio track and convert the video to something I can drop into iMovie, then drop the audio in as a separate track. From there, it's easy.

    Rumple...Why not ffmpegx v0.09t?
build r3 of it fixed many of the problems
    r1 and r2 had...?
just curious why you still use v0.09s?

Have you attempted to extract the audio to a separate file? You could use bd4go to convert the AC3 to aiff (or other formats). then you can use QT Pro to add that audio track and save as a reference movie (which refers back to the two original files). Drop -that- file into Toast and encoding should then take place. Let us know.
