I am trying to transfer miniDV tape video from Sony TRV-950 to my laptop via a firewire adapter. I tried two different software(windows movie maker and Intervideo WinDVD creator) but each time the file saved on my hard disk has this funny "confetti effect". I see these colorful confetti in the video only that it is not random. There are equally spaced lines of confetti seemingly travelling upwards.

Anybody known what am i doing wrong? The movie on the DV tape plays fine on the camcorder as well as the TV(via AV cable). I also burned a DVD to see whether it will look okay but DVD also has the same effect that i see on the file saved on the disk.

    Any help is appreciated.

    1. Did you transfer the footage as DV-AVI?

    2. Canyou post a screenshot, that would help solve the problem if it is in fact something wrong: Directions here for getting a screenshot: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=239865

    Hi ramkkaul,

    Welcome to the forums.

There's a number of probable reasons why that would occur: faulty / incorrectly fitted cable, faulty / incorrectly fitted firewire card, software used are the usual candidates.

Check the cable is inserted correctly, and that the card is seated properly in the motherboard (make sure the PC is off when doing this). Also, try transferring using WinDV - it's free and very reliable.

Another thought - are you using the same camcorder to play to the PC as was used to record onto the tape?

    Good luck.

Laptops have the most problems due to the single smallish drive. Try making a separate partition for video transfer to make it easier to defragment the files and minimize head seeks. 14GB makes a nice partition size if you have space for a full hour tape.
    .
If the OS takes the drive during transfer, a large disk head seek could cause a dropout.
