I have a short 2 minute of music that I'm trying to use Non-RealTime (NRT) FX effects with. I seem to be doing everything right, but the new takes sound just like the original.

I click on the audio track, and get the menu with NRT FX Effects. I use Sony and pick Reverb, and Add. The preset shows. Next OK, and I'm off to the preset settings. There I made some big Mode changes (I think), Save (floppy symbol), hit OK. I'm asked to save the Take, and do.

Next I pull up the Take from the audio time line menu and select choose Active. A small dialog shows up with empty, the original clip, and the take. There's a play and stop icon on the dialog. I can play either the original or the take. They sound exactly the same. I see no wave difference on the timel ine, if there's supposed to be one. What's wrong with this picture (audio?)?

I then tried this with a Sony Wah-wha, and get the same results. How do I proceed to find the difficulty?

I have cheap headphones and speakers, but I'd expect to get something different when I play the takes. There are no treble/bass controls. Just volume.

Vegas 6.0d. I guess I should put some of this stuff in my profile.

I think I understand what's going on. The effects are there, but so minimal for what's happening I don't hear them. When I used the vibrato and distortion effects, I could hear the result.

Here is my bigger problem though. First, my camcorder has a built-in mic, and I was sometimes standing 30-40' away from the presenter. As a result, boosting the volume is necessary in a number of situations. However, when boosted I think I'm starting to pick up noise from the camera and it's amplifier. What filters do I need to eliminate that? Is it possible?

In ccd work, one can subtract out dark frames. The latter contains the noise profile. Maybe something like that can be done here?

Sony has a Noise Reduction filter for Sound Forge that will do this, and Audacity has one as well. There are also commercial Noise Reduction plugins that will work in Vegas and Sound Forge, but they aren't cheap.

Try the Audacity NR plugin. Find a short sample with just the noise, then use this to remove the worst of the noise. It is good for tape and motor noise, not soe good for irregular noise.

I tried the Audacity NR and the end result is something like a cross between being underwater or an enclosed room. It's not easy, I suppose, picking out a sample section for initializing the NR. Maybe I can mask it with a low volume bit of music.

BTW, what's the pull down menu in the upper right corner for? It shows microphone, Line In, Wave, ... Not found in Help.

Any idea how to read the spectral data? The vertical axis is frequency, and the horizontal band seems to be "band" related. Energy in what band? What is the meaning of band? Why blotchy instead of continuous? The doc link in Help won't work. Well, I typed it in, but the pdf manual barely gives an explanation. Ah, bands are time. Energy change over time at various frequencies.

This is down right odd. The spectrum graphics produced in my last post above looks much different than one I ran moments ago. This one is a plot of frequency vs power for various filter (Hanning) windows. Is there another spectrum in Audacity? I don't see any thing else under Analyze (menu). Possibly a different View (menu)?

Ah, found it in the pop-down menu nicely hidden--the menu. In track header. It looks like there's even more spectral stuff in Aud according to the manual. Good.
