Hi,
What program produces the best quality DVD9 to DVD5 backups?
Im willing to pay for it, so thats not a problem.
It should be able to take out all the extras, so it just leaves the menu and movie.
Thanks in advance, would like to purchase this tommorow so hopefully some quick replys![]()

I use freeware versions with excellent results:
1. DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter to rip the DVD to the Hard Drive.
2. VobBlanker to strip out all extras, trailers, warnaing screens etc..
3. DVD Shrink to compress using Deep Analysis and additional enhancements to reduce quality loss.
4. Use MenuEdit (payware - optional) to disable menu buttons no longer in use (eg bonus material that has been stripped out).
Some good paywares are:
AnyDVD (for ripping)
DVD Remake
DVD Rebuilder

Thanks for the reply.
But why use vob blanker? You could use DVD shrink, make the extras 'still image' and then use the menu edit program to stop the extras button working.
Also what additional enhancements do you use to reduce quality loss in dvd shrink? Sharp (default)? I have no idea which one to pick for each DVD. -
If the extras are, say 900MB, DVD Shrink will reduce this to, say 150MB. VobBlanker will reduce it to 10KB. DVD Shrink will produce still images but it still takes up some memory while VobBlanker replaces the extras with a blank title, hence the smaller size; 150MB compared to 10KB.
I usually use maximum sharpness but thats an individual choice. Some people tend to choose alternatives depending on how much compression is required. -

This system uses either CCE, HC or QuEnc, so really all you have to pay for is DVD-RB Pro, or CCE Basic, CCE SP or even Canopus encoder if you want to use a commercial encoder instead of the included freeware encoders that a lot of people are happy with
The difference between this method and the others is that this way actually encodes the video to match the bitrate, not just squash it on-the-fly like what happens with transcoders like DVD Shrink, DVD2One, CloneDVD, etc, etc
Plus you can apply filters to the video if you wish which makes it an even better choice and user matrices to sqeeze that bit more quality if you want
The only loss is time, but a lot of people would rather lose time than quality
Just checking the various modes in DVD-RB PRO you can backup various ways, which may be exactly what you are looking for :
Full Backup
Movie Only
Movie and Menus Only
Movie, Menus and slideshow the extras
Its a very powerful piece of software, but really is incredible simple to use, with a 'one click' backup mode from that back up of you're ripped DVD to burning it in literally 'one click'
Can do episode disks and movie only very easily -
Forgot to add it even has an installer that actually installs everything for you, except any commercial encoders and the installer does work, not a bodged affair and you are left wondering what the hell to do next
The included built-in helpfile is very good and the forum is even better
Yes, I do use this myself, but do also use DVD Shrink or SlySoft CloneDVD still, so can compare the differences -
I would vote for DVD Rebuilder (Pro or Free) with either CCE or Procoder as the encoder. If you use the free version you can use Vobblanker or Shrink to remove extras or set up for menu only, then DVD RB to encode.
