  1. I just bought a Philips DVP642, and I'm impressed that it'll play various files that I had stored on my hard drive, including various xvid and divx mpegs (& avi's). In any case, the only problem with it is that it's silver, and Philips offers no black version.

I've thought about going out to a craft store and buying some black paint, or maybe I could throw some black fabric on top of it.

I've browsed around for some black DVD players which will support the formats that the DVP642 will, and I found a few, but these other players still have silver on them (such as the Kiss DP-1500). I don't want any silver at all on the thing.

So, I guess I have two basic questions:

Question 1: What options are there for all-black DVD players which will support xvid and divx mpegs & avis?

Question 2: What options are there for painting our silver DVD players and TVs? Maybe there's some removable paint we could use for if we ever have to send the thing in for repair. I wonder if painting them would void the warranty? Anyway...

Question 2: I wouldn't recommend painting it. It would certainly void the warranty.

I've done it with a DVD burner, though. I just found some compatible flat black spraypaint. I also removed the front bezel to keep from getting paint inside and painted it by itself. The paint is hard to get even without putting on too much and obscuring the surface design. And you have to mask any buttons or indicator lights. I notice it began to wear off the eject button after a while.

Krylon makes a paint especially for plastic, but it's thick and really fills in the surface features. Bonds really well with the plastic, though. I used it on a PC case front bezel. It worked, but came out blotchy. I wouldn't try it again.
