  1. Hello, sorry if this question has been asked before but I am in search/need of a DVD player I can hook up to my TV that can handle DVD+R DL. The unit should be certified by the maker it can do DVD+R DL playback format. Right now all I can do is watch DVD+R DL on my PC.
    My Phillips DVD 793C player does well with DVD5 (DVD-R) but I always get "disk error" when I try to play a DVD+R DL
    Please comment on your DVD player(s) choice. NOTE: I am refering to players that hook up to TVs NOT PC Optical drives
    =====================
    Intel Pentium 4 530
    Asus P5P800
    Optical Drive: ASUS DRW-1608P2
    Media: RiDATA DVD+R DL
    ======================

    Also why can’t I find DVD-R DL blank media? Which format does the movie industry use and is it availible on the market?

    Thanks!

  3. I don't think there is any player certified by manufacturer for dl.

    just set the book type to dvd-rom and it's fine, the player thinks is a pressed disc.

    DON'T use -dl that is even more crap than +dl since there is no book type feature, so the player thinks is a sl disc.

    If you are using + media download dvdinfopro and choose the 8th icon on the top and set your +r and +rw media to dvd-Rom

    I presume you used the search feature for the players listed on this site. I know they are not certified by the makers but sometimes people's comments do help

  8. OK I'm confused! DVDINFOPRO says the DVD+R DL disk i burned as follows:
    ===============================================
    Media Information
    Disc Regions are 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8
    Media code/Manufacturer ID RITEK D01
    Media Product Revision Number 01h
    UDF Format Type V1.02
    UDF Volume Name SWROTS
    UDF Application id None
    UDF Implementation id Nero
    UDF Recording Date/Time (mm/dd/yyyy) 11/ 8/2005 10:31:20
    Format Capacity 7.55GB(8.10GB)
    Book Type DVD-ROM
    Media Type DVD+R DL
    Data area starting sector 30000h
    Data area end sector 3C606Fh
    Layer 0 end sector 21309Fh
    Linear Density 0.293um/bit
    Track Density 0.74um/track
    Number of Layers 2
    Layer Track Path direction (OTP) Opposite track path
    ==============================================
    Im ignorant about this "book type". I just either want a way where my present player will play the DVD+R DL media or another player and yes I did a search but some report success while others say "no" on the same model. Thanks again for the help!

    Sorry for the slight tangent but, you may get better success with different media. I've no direct experience myself but have heard bad reports about Ritek D01 media. Try Verbatim +DL media (MKM...)

    I use verbatims DL and booktype them as well and they play perfectly in both the Denon 2200 and the Sony (actually both Sony's). Book type justs changes the character of a Dvd +R to -R or Dvd-Rom, which plays in a larger variety of players.

    Your burner needs to be able to support Book typing or you would need a firmware update or a program to flash a modified firmware (in the case of the Nec 3540a...Latest firmware is 1.03, but it only allows book typing +DL (which I use decrypter in Iso Read and ImgBurn Iso write for DL). The latest modified firmware will allow book typing. I'm getting ready to do this to my Nec, the Sony and Samsung both do Book Type.

  11. So if I get a burner that supports "Book Typing", my stand alone player might play it? Please tell me what tools I need (recomended burner and/or stand alone player) to enjoy watching DVD+R DL on my stand alone player (the one I hook up to my TV).
    Thanks!

    The average is about two-thirds 60-70% of players work with DVD+R DL media. You should generally use MKM media, not RITEK junk, and booktype it to DVD-ROM.

    There is not master list of what works. Have to rely on user reports. Testing yourself also works.

    Burners that support bitsetting are many. Some Sony DL burners are rebadged lite-on's (as is my Sony DRX 800UL external (hooked through firewire), My internal Samsung and Nec both can bitset +R DL media and then the media can play without issue in both my Sony stand alones and as I said the Denon (which is extremly picky, especially with DL) but once it has been bitset the media plays fine, including menus. If you want to have free progs...Dvd Decrypter can do DL and can be bitset to Dvd Rom. Just place the movie in the Dual Layer Burner...run Decrypter, but instead of File Mode you use Iso mode...first click Read...the prog. will display all the information about the disk (It should have # of layers 2, especially if it is a big movie with a lot of extras, lately I have used this method on older films that are on one layer andthen I just place a single layer ddv in to burn), click the arrow botton to start the process with decrypter. After Decrypter places the files on your HD, then go back up to Iso Mode, but this time click ISO write, then click the file folder on the right side of the page and find the MDS of the movie or Iso of the movie, click it and then change the book type and change the burn speed.
    (p.s. in the right hand corner of the start page there is abook, click it and there you will see the book type page and just find your drive, then click current media in use and then hit the Dvd-Rom botton and click change and it should say change was successful.) After this just click write and decrypter will burn for you an exact duplicate of the dl movie or single layer movie.
    Nero can change book type (It located on the final page prior to burning, it will be in the options button, IF your burner supports this option...even if it doesn't there are firmware updates and modified firmware updates that can change this feature so that your burner can be bitset. Hope this helps...let me know if you need anything else. Many dvd players will identify what media it is capable of playing. Look at your booklet that came with your player. I had a Toshiba that only played -R...the Denon 2200 plays -R but +R it has some issues, but since I bit set +R media it is no issue.

    It's actually fairly easy, and you'll usually only need DVD Decrypter. I am assuming you are backing up a commercial DVD to a DVD+R DL disc, and that your burner supports double layer burning.

    1) Insert the commercial DVD into DVD-ROM drive.
    2) Open DVD Decrypter. Press 'R'. It will go into ISO read mode. Click on the Decrypt icon. It will take about 20 minutes to put the DVD on the hard drive. Make sure to write down or remember the location of where it's going.
    3) When it's done, it will say "Operation successfully completed!". Remove the commercial DVD and put a DVD+R DL disc into the burner.
    4) Press 'W'. DVD Decrypter will then go into ISO write mode.
    5) You'll want to change the booktype to DVD-ROM. To do this, click on the "change book type" icon in the lower right corner. A screen will come up that says "please select the appropriate tab for your drive type." If you don't know what your drive type is, try the tabs one at a time. For each one, choose "Change for ---> Drive (For DVD+R DL media)". If the current setting says "Unkown - Failed!", then just go on to the next tab. Eventually you should get one that recognizes your drive. When that happens, choose "New Setting ---> DVD-ROM". It should then give you a "success!" message.
    6) Select the location of the "source" file (where DVD decrypter put the MDS file on your hard drive), and click on the "Write" icon to write the DVD. When it's done, it will say "Operation successfully completed!".

    NOTE: It may take several minutes to finalize the DVD.

  16. your Asus is a rebadged Pioneer 110.
    I think, it burns +DL with dvd-rom booktype by default, so you don't have to change it,

    as you showed, the booktype is dvd-rom, but use Verbatims. and even so, it might not work.

  17. Thanks for all your help, (special thanks to MovieDud!). I think I got my DVD9s working! I just had to find the right player. I picked up a SONY DVP-NC80V 5 Disk Player at best buy and the DVD+R DL disks are playing fine! I think also what that one poster said is true:

    "your Asus is a rebadged Pioneer 110.
    I think, it burns +DL with dvd-rom booktype by default, so you don't have to change it"

    Thus I will be returning my Plextor PX-740A/SW for a refund.

    1. Because DL -R is still new, quite rare, and rather expensive so there isn't a lot of demand for it, and

    2. Commercial DVD's are pressed, not dye based recordables. You can get discs pressed if you want thousands of copies and have money to burn.
