  1. I use DVDSanta, Cucusoft AVI to DVD and Nero Vision, to create my movies.

A few come out alright. The rest have problems:

    1. sound but no picture
    2. sound by only www.DVDSanta.com on the screen
    3. DVD player says bad disk when I load the DVD.
    4. sound does not run the same speed as the video
    5. incorrect format

I always test my movies by playing them on the computer. I figure that if they won't play there, they won't play n DVD.

I always choose the slowest speed when given a choice. (Nero does not)

Out of 25 staples brand DVD+R DVS, about 5 have come out watchable.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Try DivXtoDVD.

Or don't use all-in-one tools, use for example this method where you can control everyting:

  4. I just bought Verbatim DVR+ at Office Max. I just runined my last Staples DVD - incorrect format.

I had DIVXtoDVD and that didn't do any better, so I tried Cucusoft.

    Yes ...

All that software is crapware IMHO too.

You can help yourself (and your software) by using GSpot and https://www.videohelp.com/play.htm#identify to make sure you have the right audio and video codecs installed. This might explain why you sometimes get audio but no picture or vice-versa. You don't mention what your source files are - I'm guessing downloaded clips, so I'm extrapolating that they've probably got VBR MP3 in them as well, which may be the reason for your synch issues. One method that generally works well is to extract the audio first to a WAV file - http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/ExtractAudio.htm or Extract audio to WAV using VirtualDubMod should help you with this.

... and follow Baldrick's advice .........erm ...... my guide
    If in doubt, Google it.

You list multiple problems that can have multiple answers....

I'd suggest going back to step one and take things in little steps to determine where you issues arise. Start with a short capture, fist thing to do is play your captured file in a media player to see if any problems are present. From there author your short test clip to a DVD on a RW, you can just keep reusing it until you get it right.

That's probably a fair statement. Be aware though that video made for viewing on a TV doesn't look as good on a computer monitor. Also note that the audio sync issues can also be present when previewing a movie, particularly in an editor. These problems may not actually be present in the file and won't affect final output.

As I suggested above get a RW for testing purposes and take little steps. One at a time to determine where the problems start.

Sometimes, (Not all, though) this means your time limit is up on your trial of the software.. Ran into the same problem until I bought it, then it worked fine afterwards..
