Sorry moy thread title was chopped off but the letter limit made me.
Anyway, when I convert .ogm to avi with virtualdubmod there is no sound. I used xvid for video compression and no audio compression. I only disabled subtiles, but I left the audio stream alone.

VirtualDubMod won't even let me convert matroska to .avi
Could someone please give a me a program to easily convert matroska to xvid avi?
    Thanks

what kind of audio? it may not work in an avi container. convert it to wav or mp3 with for example goldwave and add it in virtualdubmod and save as avi.

or use the best tool, mencoder...not the easiest..command line tool...but I have made a guide for it.

Ogg Vorbis audio uncompressed. Are there any tools with a GUI that are good for converting to .avi other than mencoder (I have seen your guide, and have to say that you do an excellent job writing guides, but it doesn't work for me)?

  5. Forget about converting MKV to AVI. Its like trying to place a modern, state-of-the-art PORSCHE engine into an old VW beetle. It just sucks.

Much worse than that I would say. With the beetle you could have yourself a nice sleeper and blow people off at the lights. That has to be worth something.

@Christian, you just have to get used to the fact that people are going to download mkv's and want to convert them to avi's, DVD's, etc.. Especially people at sites like this.

I really don't understand the need to convert to avi and then DVD though? Surely if you must do it then mkv-->DVD makes more sense?

Okay if you must know, I'm not converting to .avi for nothing. I have to convert to .avi (however crappy it may be) for other converters to recognize it. Then I convert it with AVS, then Videora iPod converter until it is suited to go on the 5G iPod.
Matroska is awesome, not doubt, but so long as an iPod can't recognize it, I will have to go back to converting it to a crappy format. Any help now that I have explained my situation?

No reason why you can't go directly from mkv to mp4. It is possible that the mkv's audio and video is already compatible.

I wouldn't call mp4 a crappy format either, although I would call apples implimentation of the format crappy.

It looks like kind of impossible to reach your incredible knowledge, which I envy, to be honest. You live comfortably at the Gods Olympus of mkv, mp4, command line programs, h264 and all that stuff. But, for the most common people, between whom I consider myself, those are issues to deal with to convert to crappy avi, just to be able to convert again to something else, that can be played on our crappy standalones, Ipod or whatever else.

I truly appreciate the hard work of investigation on new codecs and compression formats, to get a better quality within the same or even less space, and, as far as it keep being free, I appreciate it more.

But, at the moment we are posting at newbie conversion, maybe that means we are not ready to face that “high tech”. Just look how many questions people have post about h264, or mkv, and you will see what I mean. Also, maybe you can place a poll asking if we like command line programs, or if we are used to them… Even it they do everything one can need, what if one can not make it to work.

If conversion mkv>dvd is possible, it would be great to know just how. Would not need to get a crappy avi in between. The same goes for h264>dvd. I’m just wondering for what kind of people you are writing. When we come here to ask, we really appreciate your opinions, surely, but we expect the help of a “how to”, whatever conversion/issue we are dealing with.

I’m really sorry for the pitch of this post, but I am very upset at this very moment. I would love to have the knowledge that celtic_druid, Baldrick or ChristianHJW have, but, unfortunately, I don’t.

Great! Now what do I do to get it directly to mp4 (with or without subs and with compatable audio)?
