When I author DVDs using avi & mpeg videofiles, in the end product the top and bottom of the picture is always cropped. How do I add black borders to videofiles before I burn them on DVD. Can I do that in Sony Vegas 6? I checked the documentation but did not find topics on how to resize/add borders. Please help!

Turn on Overlays for the Preview window. This will show you the safe areas. The outside is called action safe, and anything inside this area should be visible on most TVs, although the extreme edges of this area might be cut off. The inside area is called the title safe area. Anything inside this area should be visible on all TVs *that's the theory, anyway). I would resize to match the action safe area. If you come in any further the borders will be visible.
The resize your image, highlight the video track, then click on the track motion button to bring up the track motion window. Grab a corner of the screen box and drag it inward to resize. Watch the preview window to work out how small you want it.
If you cant find track motion or overlay, look up the help files.Read my blog here.
