  1. I've tried to get my head around this & tried searching, but gotten no definitive answer.
Are avi's interlaced or progressive? When I rip my dvds using AutoGK, it reports the dvd as 720x480 NTSC, so that's interlaced. I would imagine that I'd have to apply 2:3 pulldown (or something like that) during encoding to get a progressive avi, so therefor avi's are usually interlaced, at least NTSC. Am I on the right track?

  2. No. Divx and Xvid AVI files are almost always progressive.

Most NTSC DVD movies contain 23.976 fps progressive MPEG2 data that is marked for 3:2 pulldown. The DVD player creates the 59.94 fields per second interlaced video as it plays the DVD. If you rip the VOB files you'll have 23.976 fps progressive VOB files.

No, that's NTSC, as opposed to PAL.

All the AVIs that AutoGK creates will be Progressive.

Edit: junkmalle beat me to it. Hi junkmalle.

MPEG-4 specs allow for interlaced encoding though and both XviD and DivX support it.
