1 I extract my VOB with DVD Decrypter
2 Opened the VOB with VirtualDub-MPEG2
3 Saved avi with VideoCompression set to Divx3 MPEG4 Low Motion
4 I open this movie in vegas for editing:

5 Vegas recognizes the video, and it starts "building peaks" (im assuming thats for the audio)
6 When it gets to 100% I get this error:

7 I click ok, and the program (vegas) closes.

Any ideas what is causing it this error?
    How to fix it?

You may be wondering why I'm using the divx3 codec. Its the only compression method I know of that vegas will actually read. I've tried divx5, 6, and xvid. Sometimes vegas will only recognize the audio, or only the video, and many times neither when using those codecs. I've tried using VirtualDub to save an uncompressed AVI, but the audio and video are always choppy...as if the file is so huge it can't process playing it.

Any suggestions would be great, I've been working on this for the past 3 days, and will be continuing on through the night. ><

    Thanks

You would get better quality if you saved to DV instead, as that is Vegas' native tongue. I suspect in this case the problem is the audio. I don't think Vegas can import AC3 audio. If you wan't mutli-channel audio you have to strip it out of the video, convert it to 6 mono channels, then load each of these into Vegas to Create a new AC# file aftere diting.

It believe that will give you better video quality, but I don't believe it will fix this particular problem, which I still think is related to the AC3 audio.

Thanks for tip in the right dirrection duns1inger!
I was able to insert a DV version into vegas without vegas crashing while building peaks, so huzzah!
Audio didn't work, couldn't hear it, so I deleted that track.
Read something about nandub on doom9.
Extracted a fullprocessingmode wav from the DV version with nandub
Droped that wav into vegas and snyced it no problem.

edited, rendered, and playing just fine in powerpoint

I wound up rendering out of vegas with the divx5 codec instead of the DV one because of the filesize. Somehow I dont think powerpoint would enjoy playing several huge avis.
(end project will have around 15slides of text and 5 slides of 2-3minute video clips, which would be around 300mb+ each with the dv codec)

I would seriously consider using WMV for power point for a couple of reasons

    1. It's M$, so it will play nicely in power point

    2. It's M$, so it will play in windows XP without the need for extra codecs.
