  1. I'm having a problem playing back a divx4 file on a Philips 642/37. The video plays fine but the audio desyncs or drops for 1 second(repeatedly). The "quick fix" I've seen in the forums does not correct the problem. Based on the information provided...Can anyone identify a problem with the settings?

Can too high a video resolution(video plays fine) or video bitrate affect audio playback? I had boosted the audio on this video with virtual dub. I left the interleave settings at their default settings. Did I screw up? Please help.

I don't know enough about the whole process to know if any of your settings listed above could be causing the problem, but I've found that on my Philips DVP630 I also get an audio sync problem when played from CD R/RW. However they play fine from DVD R/RW. Not an ideal fix I appreciate, but certainly easy.

  3. I've made other cd-r's(divx5 and vcd) that play fine. (Don't have a dvd burner...yet ) I've forgot to mention that the resolution is the res(PAL) used in europe. I live in the states. I didn't notice it before. Could this be the problem? From what I've read in the USA the resolution is 720x480 (NTSC) and in Europe and other parts of the world its 720x576(PAL). Can the wrong resolution intefere with audio?

I don't work with DivX much, but your audio seems OK. I may be completely wrong about this, but I have a vague memory that square pixels can be a problem. Please do NOT accept that statement as 100% correct, but you might want to see if you can find any more info on it.

PAL resolutions played on the player using NTSC output should not cause audio sync problems. I have a PAL DivX that plays fine on my player. In other words, the resolution isn't the problem, but if my memory is right and the player doesn't like square pixels that that might be the cause of your problem.

  5. I think the problem might be that you boosted the audio. If you have a video file with something like 32,000khz 96kbs and then you change it to 44,000khz and 128kbs, then this will give you playback problems.

It is important that if you change the audio, you should only change the kbs and/or change from vbr to cbr. However you need to respect the original khz and not change that.

  6. Actually I did that. I installed the LAME mp3 encoder because my old encoder couldn't match the settings of the original file. The audio is CBR. Since I'm using the same settings is the volume boost the cause? Could it be the encoder I used? Anyone here use LAME mp3 encoder?

I don't know... I have heard of people having sync problems with 44.1KHz audio. You could try resampling to 48KHz. Could also slow it down to 23.976fps whilst you are at it.
So resample audio to 48KHz, whilst changing length 25-->23.976 and remux with video, setting the framerate to 23.976.

  8. The bitrate for this video is 1793 Kbps.(Should have posted this too...sorry) Is this setting too high for a divx playback from a cd-r?

I thought i had read that the Philips DVP-642 can have problems with playback if the video is more than 640 in width.

This is the only thing that I can see that might be a problem other than perhaps the audio ... my guess is try 48k instead of 44.1k etc.

Also could be the video bitrate is too high but I didn't see that listed in your specs of the file.
