Yes, I'm a little dense when it comes to this subject, I guess. I've looked at the guides that talk about doing this, but I really need one like the ones on this site, you know, with the 8 x 10 glossies and the circles and arrows and stuff. I'd like to just add this as a step to the newbie rip guide, but I guess it's just not that easy.

I'm checking out dvdx, but that's a whole day. I can see why people would be concerned about their drives.

So, is there such a guide? Or who's the brave soul who can make one?

Here's the method I normally use. Virtual Dub with the VobSub filter, frameserved to TMPGenc/CCE.

That one looks promising...when you say tmp/cce, does that mean I can use tmp or cce?

  5. Or you can look at Sefy's guide here

    http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/articles/index.html

I use flaskmpeg 6.1 subfix (from doom9.org) frameserved to TMPGenc (normally for SVCD so I don't have a problem with quality). Guide is here

  6. Try the old FlaskMPEG 0.5.9.4 instead and then you dont need the Subtitles plugin because it is included. If this is true, then why should be use flaskmpeg 0.6+subfix if 0.5 has the subtitles included?

so if i use flaskmpeg 0.6, i'm gonna need the flaskmpeg 6.1 subfix? if i do, i can't find it on doom9's site....can you please provide a link to it...

Ok, I hit a snag...virtual dub does not recognize the file I created with VFAPI codec (and I installed the .bat file). Error is "Cannot determine file type of..." The file does end in an .avi extension. I also have proxy on in vdub, installed handler...anything else I need to do here to get it to recognize this file?

PS I also tried with proxy off in vdub, as was suggested in another forum...that didn't work either.

Run proxyoff.reg and try again. I am sure it will work then. If not, uninstall the handler and try again.

Ok, I found a fix for this on the flexion forum (under dvd converting).

You have to turn proxy-off before you start dvd2avi...then turn it back on before you start vdub. There is also some file name changing that has to go on. Anyway, it appears to be working for me at this moment. In case anyone else is having the same troubles (and from looking at the flexion board, it appears that they are!).

    Crossing fingers...
