I have been following this guide https://forum.videohelp.com/topic153058.html to add sub titles to an avi media file.

After downloading and installing the latest ffdshow program, I found that the menu on the left, as per the guide, is not in ffdshow properties (default) but in video decoder configuration.
I enabled subtitles and told ffdshow where to find the subtitle for the media file I want subtitles in.
I the played the said media file in WMP, but there were no subtitles.
The name of the subtitle file is the same as the media file.
    So what have I missed?
    Thanks

When you play the avi do you see a ffdshow-icon in the notification area? If not then isn't ffdshow used and you might have to enable the codec that is used in the avi.

    Or use Autogk instead, https://forum.videohelp.com/topic316471.html

Ok I just tried the AutoGK method suggested and there was a problem after 20 odd minutes.

EXCEPTION: Cannot open file "M:\Media\name of file.SWEDiSH.XviD-MoA\CD1\name of file-xvid-cd1\agk_tmp\frames.log". The system cannot find the file specified

I looked and couldn't find the said file also.
    Any ideas here?

    Thanks

See http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=48936 . But easiest would probably be try 1-pass encoding instead of 2-pass and see if it works.

Gordon Bennet! Too many ifs for me.
After opening the sub title in another program I found that it was not an English sub as I first thought, so I'm not going to try again.

    Thanks anyway
