I have AMD XP 2400 with a MB that has I think 200mhz FSB. A buddy down the road has an Intel 2.4 with a FASTER FSB, and encodes faster.

What I am curious, from those with any hands on experience, does a faster FSB effect encode times?

Im looking to upgrade in the near future, but I want to know what is going to give me faster encodes (besides the obvious CPU clockspeed).

    Thanks much,
    Andrew

Remember the AMD 2400 has a 1.66Ghz processor, even though AMD uses a different rating system. The CPU speed is the main factor for encoding speed, but FSB or bus speed does help and memory speed helps also, though not necessarily amount of memory. The motherboard chipset also has some effect. The hard drive speed has probably the least bearing on encoding speed compared to those others.

  3. I've recently upgraded to a AMD X2 3800. This is one of the new dual core cpu's. I currently use Cinema Craft Encoder to process videos. It sped up process time- only mildly. Not what I was expecting- BUT

The great thing is that it doesn't tax my system like it used to. I process video, play online poker, burn dvds, and print from Photoshop at the same time without a hiccup in my system. (I'm also running 2GB of memory.)

Before I couldn't use my system (XP1800) while processing video, because it was too much of a strain!

Now if there was a 64bit version of a encoder, I bet it would speed up process time significantly.
Am I happy? HELL YES! Loved the upgrade!

I may be looking at an Intel based CPU for my upgrade, thanks for the info!
I have been into computers since 1980. Ive been tinkering with DV in one flavor or another since 1990.
