Who told you that? Do you have a celeron 400 or something? For most people it takes 3 or 4 hours, and much less if you do a 1-pass Target quality.

You can use virtualdubmpeg 2 to convert to divx or xvid or another avi variant. It will accept avi and mpeg files. As for other formats check the TOOLS section for more converters.

The actual app doesn't make much difference since you will always be using the same codec (there is only one XviD).

What exactly do you mean by XviD though? Mencoder can convert just about anything to raw XviD streams, it can also output to an avi container.

Then that's what the convert guides to the left are for - (https://www.videohelp.com/convert).

    Using Vdub - https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?tools=2&madeby=&formatconversionselect=to+AVI&howt...or+List+Guides
    Using VdubMod - https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?tools=332&madeby=&formatconversionselect=to+AVI&ho...or+List+Guides
    Using VirtualdubMPEG2 - https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?tools=72&madeby=&formatconversionselect=to+AVI&how...or+List+Guides
..But there's something wrong with your setup..Even on an old AXP (@ 2.14GHz), I can do a *>AVI/XVID within 4-5 hours at most (using 2 pass).

What stuff do you have running in the background (ie: firewall/AV/etc)?.. Done a virus/spyware scan?..
Installed one of those mega-codec packs (*bad!*)? Defragged your HD lately?
