  1. Is there any way to make Final Cut Pro 4 understand a bunch of different file types? Mov, RM, etc?

    Your choices for ingestion into Final Cut pro are:

    .DV ( digital Video)

    anything outside of that must be rendered into
    .DV format.

    You would think .mov WOULD, but it can often produce
    out of sync audio. Best to convert to .DV stream.
    As for .RM ( Real Media) , Soreson Squeeze maybe....?

  3. I could swear Ive taken in .Mov files and I thought AVI or some form of Mpeg. Are there any type of codecs to make the files read?

    no.
    Even with all the QT Codecs installed
    ( 3iVx, divx 5.21, the QT MPEG-2 plugin)
    the footage would still have to render to .DV stream
    on import.
    .Mov, provided both video and audio are in codecs QT likes,
    possily could, but every one I've ever tried produced out
    of sync audio, that could only be fixed by exporting the .mov
    out of Quicktime Pro to .dv stream, then re-importing
    into FCP.
