Laughable, I agree. But I think you can convert to NTFS from FAT32 without reformatting.

    Yep,

You should be able to run convert from a command prompt.

Run convert /? to list the arguments that you can give the command.

    should be something like this:

    convert c:\ /fs:ntfs

Should require a reboot, during the reboot, you'll see a screen similar to the disk check screen. After it finishes, you should then have ntfs on the next login.

At work, we run NTFS on all of our drives (for security/permissions and such). We have some machines that only have a 4GB drive available and they run NTFS with no problems.

It's been a while since I've done it but, isn't there a way to run the upgrade by just providing the CD to prove you have it without actually INSTALLING 98?
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

I know that the 95 upgrade (From 3.1) had a check for the install media. You didn't have to have 3.1 installed, just the media available. I haven't tried that in forever though, so I don't know if it's still there or not.

Somewhere during the install, it looked for a previous install, if it didn't see one, then it would prompt for the installation media. Put disk 1 of 3.1 in and then 95 would install to a clean HD.

It may still be there, but again, I haven't tried for quite some time.

  10. good way of "break the ice" RabidDog ...oh well...

I have dvd data disks with ISO files with more than 4 GB ...for this I need
NTFS ...I hope my TINY ONE can resist all this "TWIST AND SHOUT" ...

    seriously...

talking of convert FAT32 to NTFS...our dear MS tells also another thing...
In the help of XP PRO I search the word "convert" I was found that ...

"the HD's converted from FAT to NTFS don't have some advantages of performance
the MFT could be fragmented...and don't have NTFS permissions after the conversion..."

What is MFT ? (Only for curiosity)

it's better formating the HD with NTFS than convert ?

I guess is the same thing ...

Master File Table. Contains information about the files and directories in a partition.

    Hello Again,

I'm sure that you might have some fragmentation after a conversion (I've never really checked), however, you can run a disk defragmenter program to fix most of that (Windows has one built in for 2000 and XP at least, not sure of the others, been too long).

As for the permissions, since you had none to start with, you shouldn't miss them that much. Once you have NTFS in place, you can then start assigning permissions if you so choose. My machine at work has shared directories that only certain people can access, however, I don't bother with that at home.

It boils down to if you want to save your data and do a full reinstall, or if you want to only convert your drive. Should be your choice, unless you have a machine that will only allow the reinstall of the factory preload. If you only have a preload and they used fat32, then you'll still have fat32 after the reinstall. If you have a machine that has actual installation media, then you can choose which file system you want during the installation.

I read several places about running full installs from an upgrade disc... I can't quite remember how that goes, but....

  14. ALSO remember its a one way street .. no going back.. so when you find out that your (say) scanner doesnt have drivers under xp then you have to go out and get a new scanner. Thats why MS advocate backing up all your data beforehand, (you can still reformat and re-install win3.1) also its easier on their support people who can say "well, you've still got your data haven't you?"
