  1. Hey folks. Some kind soul posted his successful efforts concerning this matter. I thought it was in one of the Philips 5990/37 threads but I'm damned if I can find it.

It was a great example of what to do when one wants to use the EHD for use with the 5990; including amounts of directories/files, partitions and all that.

Anyone know what I'm on about?

Not sure what your asking. But:
The number of folders for the 5990 is 640 but you can have additional subfolders.
Swissknife as well as the Seagate and WD disk programs can pretty much reformat any size drive to fat32. I've only used a max of 2 partitions with 2tb drives but I assume you can do more.
You can have both fat32 and NTFS on the same drive. The 5990 will see the fat32 partition but not the NTFS.

    Hope these comments help

I used CompuApps Swiss Knife to convert an external USB to FAT for my car player.

  5. Thanks folks. Got the drive formatted to FAT32, though I didn't partition it.

Cal, you say, "The number of folders for the 5990 is 640 but you can have additional subfolders." I thought there was a finite amount of files/folders one could put on the drive and it didn't matter which, but once you hit that amount that's it.

Can the 5990 recognize the partition? Can I have the drive represent two 1 terrabyte drives and therefore double the amount of files/folders?

    Obviously, I'm confused. :>

The number of folders is 640 and from what I understand each of these folders can also have 640 folders within them.
If you have multiple fat partitions the 5990 will recognize them. If some of your multiple partitions are NTFS the 5990 will not recognise the NTFS ones.

The total number of files and folders is very large. I'm not sure how large but it was discussed on this site more than a year ago.

  7. Thanks Tony. I remember the discussion on the number of files and folders, but I can't find it on the site, as per my first post.

I'd no idea the 5990 would recognize the partitions. Cheers.

The mate that helped me with this mentioned he'd put something on the drive that would allow me to partion (lard, partition, even) and format sections of the drive without losing what's already on it, though at this write I've no idea what software this is.

    and this: https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/303912-Philips-DVP-5990-37-question
and this, look for my post. https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/315578-DVP-5990-and-Exteranal-HDs?highlight=s-toon looks like you started this one and i helped you out before here lol

I am trying to get a 2tb hdd and format it to fat 32, and then partion it in half, wanting to equall parts in fat 32 so that in one half I can store movies and tv shows, and in the other half cartoons (american made) and anime. All you have to do to go from one partition to the other on the 5990 is to press the USB Button on your remote and it will swich over to the other partition you had on your hdd in fat32.

Converting External HD's from NTFS to Fat32

to be clear on that, the only thing that can be converted is the used Filesystem.
And to achieve that properly, move all content to another target, format the source drive with FATxx and then copy the content back.

AHA! Thanks again. I knew you were out there somewhere. Looks like I've got some reading to do. This said, I've plenty of time to do some reading as my feckin' disc drive just quit on me, and this after only about 100 discs transfered.

  11. Hey folks, I've been attempting to use Drivesort to sort things alphabetically on this external, but no matter what it doesn't save the file-sort even after sorting and saving each folder. Frustrated is not the word.

S-Toon, if you're still watching this thread what did you use to sort your 2TB external?

Ok, I've found another app' called FoldertSort. I've yet to try it, but about to give it a shot. Anyone else use this one?

Well, the moment of truth has arrived and DFolderSort worked like a charm. Bloody fast too, considering I'd over a TB of info already on the drive.

Looks like DriveSort was okee for my thumbdrives, but not this beeg bugger. Anyhoo, thanks for taking the time to read this, any that may do so.
