  1. Is the below format going to be supported by stand alone DVD players in the near future? I'm assuming there are no current players available on the market that can play Apple's MOV files.

    MOV
QuickTime Content (.mov, .qt) - a file format developed by Apple Computer to create, edit, publish, and view multimedia files. QuickTime supports video, animation, graphics, 3D and virtual reality (VR).

    Thanks,

    Rod

Well I wouldn't be supprised if Nero Digital Certified players can handle .mov since it is similar to mp4, however that would be only if they contained compatible streams.

Most players don't even support avi or raw mpeg, so I doubt anyone is planning to support MOV files.

Like I say though mp4 and mov are similar enough that if I was implimenting mp4 support I would also do .mov support.

Look at haali's splitter for instance. It is an mkv, avi, mp4 splitter. No mention of .mov however it can handle a mov containing AVC video and aac audio just fine. Just don't expect it to parse sorenson video or anything else non MPEG-4 related.

Well...you're not and apparently Apple isn't pushing it, so it's unlikely. Unless Apple is willing to put some money out to the hardware producers you probably won't see anything at all. My best bet will be for higher quality formats like Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, WM9, etc. That's where the money trail will be going...

Look at DXN, they don't pay hardware producers the producers pay them. If you want your player to be DivX certified, you pay them money.

I am talking about newer players that support WM9 and AVC. These players also tend to handle mp4.

Definatly if apple was pushing it, then it would be more likely. But like I say if you already support mp4, then supporting mov is not much work and it adds value to the player.

Player X supports quicktime and player Y doesn't. Which one do you buy if the price is the same? Never mind that it only supports quicktime with limited codecs, the same has been true for avi since the begining.

  7. I don't know of any brand of standalone DVD player that supports playback of raw MOV files.

Apple has always had a chronic problem with their Not Invented Here crap. Apple always has to invent some bogus new Apple-only "standard" that no one else supports and that dies out in the general marketplace -- ADB, Appletalk, AIFF, MOV, nubus, it's all proprietary Apple-only junk. Worthless.

My solution to idiots who post downloadable video in MOV format is simple. Ignore 'em. If they use a non-standard format like MOV, they're too clueless to produce anything worth watching anyway.

  8. I just found this DVD-player the other day following a link from Doom9, it's apparently not available, but judging from the specs it's supposed to support .MOV. I'm guessing it's quick-time.
    JVC SRDVD-100U
According to the poster it will be using the Sigma EM8622L Chip-set.

XBOX does, using XBMC on a hacked system.
I downloaded and watched all the BMW films that way.
