  1. Since my cable provider upgraded their channel guides on my Motorola PVR 6412, I can no longer dub from the Motorola PVR to my Toshiba DR2 as I NOW get a copyright error...

Is there a fix for this....??? Or can someone recommend a DVD recorder that can capture copyright material....

    TIA

  3. Do a search on this site. I have seen several references to a device that can fix your problem, but since I don't need it, I don't really remember much about it, like, for example, the name of the device or the company.

I have three tvs in my home, however only one TV has a cable tv box (Motorola PVR 6412) and I would like to record shows on my Toshiba DVD recorder to watch in my bedroom or in the rec room....

  6. Do all DVD recorders support this copy protection....??? I thought I read elsewhere there were a few makes/models the circumvented this...

  7. The Video Filter also allows you to backup your video collection to the Toshiba.

  10. When I connected my computer with an Hauppauge PV250 capture card, I was able to capture recordings on my Motorola to my computer's hard drive.... So it must be the Toshiba DVD recorder that is having issues with the upgrades to the Motorola....

Thanks OneSickPup for the link...but for the price of the filter I MAY be able to purchase another DVD recorder that is not as picky as the Toshiba about copyrighted material....(any thoughts)....

  11. Wish I could be of more help but honestly I don't know what advice would be best for your situation. I studied up a bit on CPRM/CGMS only because I thought it would effect me. As it turns out, my Comcast cable provider still is not passing the CGMS-A flag even though they do in other parts of the US. I still record any HBO digital channel without incident. Never tried PPV as we rarely ever use that service. Maybe someone else with better practical experience will happen along and share some advice.

One other thing. I may be incorrect but I think the Hauppauge PVR250 and PVR350 cards are known to ignore copy protection - to what degree I do not know. Might check over in the capture forum for more info on that.

  12. No problem at all...you have been very helpful....

I thought I read a post once my Lord Smurf where he suggested there were a few DVD recorders that used or shared hardware with the Hauppauge cards... I maybe wrong though.....

  13. Just spoke with a technician at Eastlink (my cable provider)....the firmware upgrade to the Motorola 6412 is causing this problem....Apparently it is by Motorola's design....

An expensive but excellent solution would be a full frame TBC (Time Base Corrector).

The AVT-8710 is about $190 USD

The DataVideo TBC-1000 is about $290 USD

Those are the cheapest Full Frame TBC devices that the hobbyist can purchase. After that they go up to around $1,000 USD +

A TBC will "re-sync" the video and as a "side effect" it will remove ALL forms of copy protection. There are many threads about just what a TBC is and exactly what it does.

I don't know about Canada but the USA based website B&H PHOTO & VIDEO has both of these devices for about as cheap as they can be purchased.

  15. Just picked up a LiteOn DVD-R/-Rw +R/+Rw at Walmart for $164.00 (Canadian) and it records fine (so far) from the Motorola... Go figure...

    Thanks all for the replies...

  16. No problems yet with the new LiteOn...able to record channels from the Motorola I could not with the Toshiba... I've also been able to rip the LiteOn records to my computer's hard drive and re-author to another DVD-R...

I love how the DVD+R/+RW in the LiteOn don't have to be finalized for my computer to read them.... However the LiteOn does not allow for fine tuning of various recording modes, it only has pre-defined 1hr, 2 hr, 4hr and 6hr... However it does record VCDs & SVCDs as well as audio CDs... This unit is COOL....

WALMART has a Lite-On with a built-in HDD and it was on sale for $228 and I almost bought it (instead of the Pioneer DV-531H-s that I did buy) but the reason I didn't buy it was the pre-defined times.

There is a hack for (some?) models of LiteOn units that do "open up" a 3 hour mode. I think LordSmurf and/or GShelley know where to get it.

    P.S.
Actually the WALMART unit was ILO but that is still a LiteOn ... just with a different "name" on it.

Get a Sima CT-2 box to place between the set top box and the composite video input on the DR-2. That should take care of it.

  20. Or you can get a Video Filter and produce better recording.
