Hi,
I have a few short videos in DivX format that I want to author to DVD-RAM to play on my standalone Panasonic DVD-Recorder.
Rather than waste lots of DVD-Rs testing it out and tweaking I was wondering how easy it is to author a DVD-RAM that will play on Panasonic.
That way if I bodge it or don't like the results I can just wipe the disc and just try again.
So I guess I am effectivly importing a DivX and exporting a DVD-RAM.
I will be attempting this at the weekend so any experience anyone has would be apprieciated.
Thanks
John

DVD-RAM is just another disk format. You cannot author to DVD-RAM, you just author as you would any disk, and burn it to DVD-RAM.
To do this you need to be sure of two things
1. Does your DVD player read DVD-RAM disks ?
and
2. Does your DVD burner write to DVD-RAM disks ?
A third valid question might be - why bother with DVD-RAM, which is expensive, when DVD+/-RW is a lot cheaper and easier to use ?
What process do you intend to use to convert your Divx files to DVD ?Read my blog here.

Thanks for the response Gunslinger.
So it that easy?
I thought that DVD-RAM used a different file system of DVD-VR (VRO files) instead of the standatd VOB.
Or is this just when they are recorded on standalone machines?
So I should be able to Author to a DVD-RAM using the standard DVD-Video file structure and still have it play on my standalone?
I was going to use DVD-RAM as I only thought that my Panasonic DMR-E85 handled DVD-R and DVD-RAM, but upon reading an addendum sheet that came with the manual I see that it can only RECORD to these formats and will still read DVD-RW. D'oh
So yes I could just Burn to DVD-RW discs for testing.
PS I was going to use TMPGenc and DVD Author or DVD-lab
Thanks Again

Tried creating a DVD-Video onto a DVD-RAM disc last night.
I checked the file structure was correct the put it in the E85...
It wasn't recognised by the Panasonic with
message saying the disc needs formatting appearing on the screen.
So I guess if your using DVD-RAM discs you need to adhere to the DVD-RAM file structure.
I've now ordered some DVD-RW discs for testing out my authoring so hopefully will have more luck with these. -
Panasonic standalones do not like DVD-RAMs formatted on a PC; hence, the error when you try to play your DVD-RAM on the standalone. You Panasonic interprets the RAM as either corrupt or needing a format...
Do you really have to used a rewritable DVD-RAM instead of a plain ole -R? Given the price of DVD-RAM, it sure would be cheaper to use -R.You're never alone with schizophrenia. -
Cheers Rob.
I'm now using DVD-RW and these seem to work fine.
I just hate waste of any kind so didn't want to keep making caosters
while testing my DVD authoring skills.
