Could someone clarify to a newbie what the difference is between these two, and what is the purpose of each one.
Do you have to convert an AVI to Mpeg to burn to DVD?

For example should I capture my file to Pinnacle Studio in AVI, edit it, and export it as an Mpeg ready to burn to DVD?

I'm asking as I am having so many problems burning a DVD with an AVI file. (I've already had that question addressed here)

    Here:

    AVI

    MPEG 2

If you want it to be easier capture to mpeg 2 with one of the dvd preset modes. Then you can load the file into the program and go from there without converting it.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

Sorry, I should expand my question.

I want to get the best possible quality for my burned DVD.
Is it better to burn an AVI rather than an MPEG2 ?

If you don't plan on doing any editing or modifying of the movie, go ahead and convert directly to mpeg2. If you want to do any changes, capture as avi. Your quality will depend on the hardware and software that you use. I highly recommend that you do some reading the guides and tutorials in this forum before you get too far along. It will be well worth it.

You can't burn an avi as a dvd unless you're talking about divx for a divx player. It will have to be mpeg2 to be burnable by a dvd authoring program.

Many here use avi then convert to mpeg2. I personally can't because my wintv pvr250 only records in mpeg. I love my results and I don't like doing more work then I have to. If you want it easier capture in mpeg and then author your dvd. If you want to edit it more and throw in some filters and stuff capture in avi and then convert to mpeg. Either way your finished file has to be in mpeg2 if your making a standard dvd.
