On eDonkey I downloaded a movie. I presumed I could double click it and it would play. The file name gives away that it is a DivX and AVI but nothing more. Media Player attempts to open it but states that it is an unknown format (extension .AVI).

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

    edonkey is very unreliable.

try opening the file with virtualdub, and then doing a direct stream (audio & video) output to avi.

  3. Open it in GSpot.
    Maybe it's DivX 3.11?

Have you got a Divx-capable codec installed ?

https://www.videohelp.com/play#divx and https://www.videohelp.com/play#identify may assist you also.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Thanks guys. I first tried Gspot.

    It said "4CC: DX50/DIVX", name "DivX 5.0".

So I searched and download the DicX 6.0 here http://www.divx.com/divx/codec.php

    And that worked. Many thanks.

But problem is that it turns out to be hardcore porn instead of normal movie that I intended. So that was my first and last use of eDonkey.

A lesson hard learned. P2P is mostly crap, interspersed with large amounts of total shite. You are probably fortunate you didn't pick up anything else along the way.

Be careful what you discuss here. You clearly downloaded what you throught to be a Movie. Most likely something that had not been officially released yet right?

So in a nutshell, it was WAREZ and if that was the case please choose your words carefully. Please read the Rules before posting specially to new members. I don;t want to have this resource shut down by Big Brother over some well meaning statement by a poster.

No warez, just home brewed content

There are lots of people producing their own films and using P2P to distribute them, as a way of gaining recognition.

Besides my posts say that P2P appears crap.
